Center for Women's Health
For American women, health care can be confusing, inconvenient and challenging. The trouble begins with a tradition of health research focused primarily on men. Add to that a complicated network of providers, a practice of women’s health care that has often focused on the pelvis and breasts, and a widespread lack of accessible women’s health information.
Since the day it opened its doors, the OHSU Center for Women’s Health has helped redefine women’s health care by uniting outstanding clinical care, advanced research and innovative patient education in one convenient location. Combining traditional and complementary medicine with all the benefits of a vital research program, the center’s specialists treat a woman’s physical, emotional and spiritual health through every stage of her life.
Health experts agree that this holistic approach stands as a national model. The center was recently named a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Reproductive Malignancies
(breast and gynecological cancers) | |
| Each year more than 400 new cancer patients come to the OHSU Center for Women’s Health. Support for this priority helps provide patients and their families with the region’s most coordinated approach to treating and preventing breast and gynecological cancers. Meanwhile, through multidisciplinary research programs, researchers are hard at work on new therapies to address cervical, uterine, ovarian and breast cancers. |
High-Risk Pregnancy | |
| The number of high-risk pregnancies is increasing both in Oregon and throughout the United States. Without continued research and close collaborative attention, health risks during pregnancy can result in prematurity and/or lifelong health problems for the child. Support for this priority is helping to fund a unique collaboration among scientists and health care providers in maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, surgery and radiology. Together these experts are developing new models of care to help ensure that high-risk babies remain healthy and grow into healthy adults. |
Integrative Medicine
Research & Education | |
| One of the fastest growing areas in health care today is integrative medicine – a broad discipline based largely on the principles of Eastern medicine. Women are particularly interested in this type of holistic care, which strongly emphasizes the importance of mind-body connections as part of an overall approach to good health. Support for this priority fund helps the OHSU Center for Women’s Health provide complementary therapies – such as Chinese medicine, massage and herbal remedies – in partnership with more traditional Western approaches. |
Education and Outreach | |
| Part of the mission of the OHSU Center for Women’s Health is to empower women to become active participants in their own health. Support for this priority helps put critical educational resources in women’s hands and brings reliable health information to women and girls in communities throughout the region. |
