Oregon Stroke Center

One out of five people in the U.S. will suffer a stroke in their lifetime, two-thirds of whom will experience disability. The Oregon Stroke Center’s renowned mobile team offers 24-hour emergency stroke care for Oregonians.

A national leader in stroke care and research, the Oregon Stroke Center serves the needs of people who have suffered a stroke or who are at risk of stroke. The center’s physicians, nurses and researchers provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services, run nationally recognized clinical and laboratory research programs, and offer educational outreach to stroke patients, their families, health care professionals and the public.

The center is also home to a mobile stroke team available 24 hours a day to treat acute stroke emergencies at Portland-area hospitals and to provide consultative services throughout the state.

Center investigators are conducting some of the nation’s most progressive clinical trials, testing suction devices as a means of extracting blood clots in the brain and assessing the effectiveness of drug treatments to preserve injured brain cells. These scientists, like Helmi Lutsep (above), also are working on stroke prevention treatments to enlarge narrowed blood vessels inside the brain and using stimulation of the brain in combination with rehabilitation to try to improve limb function in patients who have residual weakness from a stroke.
