The Oregon Geriatric Education Center
(OGEC) serves the state of Oregon. The Center is a consortium
of three education and training institutions, Oregon
Health & Science University, Portland State University's
Institute on Aging, and Oregon State University's Program
in Gerontology and Cooperative Extension Service.
The mission of the OGEC is to improve care of older adults through the interdisciplinary education and training of health care providers.
In
the next half century, the elderly population in the
United States is projected to more than double in size—from
31 million to 80 million. Today, Oregon ranks 17th among
the 50 states in the percentage of its population over
age 65. Most older
adults receive care from health professionals whose
educational preparation focused on younger persons.
Older adults have complex health care needs, and
increased numbers of health professionals, prepared
in gerontology, are urgently needed to provide leadership
and high-quality care to this growing and vulnerable
population. A larger proportion of the population of
rural communities is older, and yet most providers in
these settings have not received geriatric education.
The
consortium is funded by the Health Resources and Services
Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, of the
US Department of Health and Human Services (Award #D31HP08816). |
