National Standards of Practice for Health Care
More Info: http://www.cmwf.org/cnlib/pub/enews_clickthrough.htm?enews_item_id=19534&re
For the first time, national standards of practice for health
care
interpreters have been established in the United States. With
support from
The Commonwealth Fund and The California Endowment, the
National Council on
Interpreting in Health Care developed guidelines to improve
the quality and
consistency of interpreting in hospitals, health plans, and
other medical
settings.
Quality health care depends on clear communication, and
studies have shown
that language barriers contribute to disparities in the care
received by
patients with limited English proficiency. The new standards
will help
providers meet the needs of these patients. In addition to
their use in
health care interpreter training, hiring, and performance
evaluation, the
standards could serve as the basis for a certification process
to assess
interpreters' qualifications.

Researchers have developed a more accurate way to predict
the risk of developing cardiovascular disease among women,
according to a study in the February 14, 2007 issue of the
Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers
from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, assessed 35 risk
factors among 24,558 initially healthy women 45 years or
older from the Women's Health Study who were followed up for
a median of 10.2 years for new cardiovascular events, such
as heart attack, ischem-ic stroke, coronary
revascularization, and cardiovascular deaths. The new
algorithms are called the "Reynolds Risk Score" and the
simplified model for non-diabetic women includes age,
systolic blood pressure, current smoking, total and HDL
cholesterol, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) and
parental history of myocardial infarction before age 60.

What Are the Best Ways to Measure Progress in Tackling Disparities? A Commonwealth Fund-supported study

Evidence into Policy and Practice? Measuring the Progress of
U.S. and U.K. Policies to Tackle Disparities and Inequalities in
Health and Health Care
The range of tools used to measure progress toward
eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care is as
large as the problems themselves. In a Commonwealth Fund-
supported study published in Milbank Quarterly, researchers
led by former Harkness Fellow Mark Exworthy of the
University of London analyze efforts under way in the U.S.
and U.K. to address disparities, from national public health
goals to report cards compiled at every level of the health
system.
The authors identify what works, while laying out the
challenges researchers and policymakers face in devising and
using these tools. Ultimately, successful strategies to reduce
disparities in health care will depend on the validity of these
measurement mechanisms.
