Interim NSI Director
Director's Message
The Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI) is a multi-disciplinary research organization with 23 active laboratories and a staff of about 110 researchers and support personnel. Formally organized in 1975, NSI is a well established neuroscience institute with an outstanding track record of ground-breaking research and federal funding. Our mission is to advance our knowledge of the brain and neurological disorders. Therefore, NSI investigators are heavily invested, not only in gaining new knowledge about who we are, but also in advancing the clinical management of neurological disorders — one of the most widespread and devastating problems faced by our society today.

The mission of NSI extends beyond research into education and outreach, for without a continuing stream of young investigators, our advances will be limited, and without disseminating knowledge about the latest advances, the public is less likely to take advantage of our work. We expose young kids to brain research to get them excited about science as a possible career and to make them aware of the need to take good care of their own brains. We train students at the undergraduate, graduate and post- graduate levels in formal programs. We also have an active outreach program, for example, playing a major role in the Oregon Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience and Brain Awareness Week, and we operate a public access library of neuroscience.

If you are a student with an interest in brain science, I encourage you to visit our institute to find out more the training opportunities we offer. If you are a local citizen with an interest in neurological disorders, come visit our library, either in person or over the internet, so our knowledgeable staff can help you find the information you seek.

We are here to serve you.
