Neurogenetics at the NSI

Welcome to the homepage of the Reddy research laboratory at the Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI) of the Oregon Health & Science University. The NSI is dedicated to studying diseases of the brain and the impact of these diseases on the human body. The principal investigator of the Reddy laboratory is P. Hemachandra Reddy, Ph.D., who specializes in Genetics and Molecular Biology. Assisting him are research associates, all of whom specialize in Medicine, Genetics and Neurology. The focus of research at the Reddy laboratory is neurogenetics.

Neurogenetics is a branch of the biological sciences that examines relationships between genes and nerve cells (neurons). The Reddy laboratory specifically focuses on nerve cells in the brain. Neurogenetics Laboratory investigates many different dimensions of genetics and neurons from the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, to understand how neurons affect - or are affected by - Alzheimer's disease. A major research project is now under way at the Reddy laboratory, to investigate how genes are expressed in brain cells during the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The focus of this research is on a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, due to impracticalities and ethical issues involved in attempting to research the progression of the disease in humans. The objective of these research efforts using a mouse model is to be able to someday apply this information to a human model of AD, so that the progression of Alzheimer's disease can be arrested or delayed, or, better still, so that the disease can be prevented altogether.

We encourage you to explore the pages of this web site. They are designed to give you general information about Alzheimer's disease, more specific information about the Reddy laboratory, links to other sites that are related to Alzheimer's disease and neurogenetics, and information on how to contact researchers at the Reddy laboratory.

The information on this website is regularly updated, so we encourage you to come back soon.

Note for those without state-of-the-art graphical browsers: it is the intention of this website to be able to serve everyone on the Internet who is interested in the material herein. As such, we have tried to make all of our pages accessible, however we simply do not have the knowledge or experience relating to other types of access to adequately serve you.
