Postdoctoral Training

Research at the Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI) spans the range of single molecules to human behavior, and addresses many of the major structures of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Faculty bring to NSI a rich spectrum of training and methodological approaches in basic science, engineering, and applied research. The proximity of laboratories studying different systems and using different approaches promotes collaborations and the use of integrated and multidisciplinary approaches. Training future scientists and physician-scientists is a primary mission of NSI. The diversity of research areas at the Institute is especially conducive to training in the application of multidisciplinary approaches to neuroscience problems. Trainees are supported from NIH training grants, RO1 research grants and special fellowships. If you are interested in a postdoctoral position at the NSI, please contact individual faculty members and/or Dr. Robert Duvoisin, Director of the Training Program in Neurological Sciences: duvoisin@ohsu.edu

The purpose of postdoctoral training is to develop strong research skills and a publication record, develop critical thinking and scientific communication skills, and acquire technical and laboratory management skills - all of which are essential for ultimately establishing and maintaining an independent career in neuroscience research. Towards this goal, trainees attend a seminar series featuring outstanding scientists. In addition, many seminars and classes held on the Markham Hill campus are videoconferenced to the NSI seminar room. There is also an internal seminar series by NSI postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. students that provides trainees with the opportunity to refine their presentation skills. In addition, NSI stresses community outreach as well as the application of one's basic research to health-care problems. As a result, the training program hopes to instill an awareness that the purpose of scientific research goes beyond the exploration of the unknown, to include education and application.

The NSI is located on the West Campus of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) between Beaverton and Hillsboro, about 12 miles west of downtown Portland and the Markham Hill OHSU campus. Also on the West Campus and part of OHSU are the OGI School of Science & Engineering, the Oregon National Primate Research Center and the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (see us from space with Google Maps). The MAX light rail connects the West Campus to Downtown, the Eastside and the Airport. Beaverton and Hillsboro form the center of Oregon's "Silicon Forest" where many high-tech companies' headquarters, research centers and start-ups are located, including Tektronics, Intel, FEI (electron microscopes), and the Open Source Development Labs (Linux development consortium). Nike world headquarters are located near Beaverton.

Portland and its surrounding metropolitan area (2 million population) is often noted for its planned development, convenient transportation, livability and affordability. Prime outdoor recreational sites include the Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood and the Oregon coast, all within about an hour's drive. Portland and Oregon are a haven for hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, biking, windsurfing, fishing, sailing, rafting, kayaking, surfing and beach combing. The city boasts a symphony, ballet, opera, art galleries, theaters, coffeehouses, bookstores, wineries, microbreweries, great restaurants and an active nightlife. For more information, check out the Wikipedia entry on Portland or the official tourism and meeting website.

OHSU is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution.
