PRACTICAL PRESENTATIONS, INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS HIGHLIGHT 5th ANNUAL WOMEN'S HEALTH CONFERENCE

Eight-hundred Women Expected for Daylong Festivities on Saturday, April 29

Portland, Ore. - Oregon Health Sciences University's 5th Annual Women's Health Conference will feature presentations on traditional and complementary medicine and an exciting day of interactive demonstrations and helpful health screenings.

"Women's Health in the 21st Century" runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Participants at the conference can plan the day according to their health care interests, whether it is learning about fad diets, food as medicine, the latest osteoporosis treatments, or the power of yoga and spiritual healing. The sessions are not just sit-down lectures; in the yoga workshop, for example, audience members will get down on the padded floor and learn yoga.

For the second year, the conference will feature a smorgasbord of free health assessments, from bone density and blood pressure screenings to massage therapy stations and much more. Lunch is included in the $30 admission fee and scholarships are available.

The annual conference is sponsored by OHSU's Center for Women's Health and the Campaign for Women's Health, a community effort to expand health services and research for women. Among those speaking at the event are the following:

Francine Siegal, M.D.
A nationally known, Portland-based psychiatrist, author and motivational speaker, Siegal will discuss "Secrets of a Winner."

Frances Storrs, M.D.
Storrs, an OHSU dermatologist, will address the benefits and problems of cosmetic use in "Cosmetics: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

Karen Adams, M.D.
Director of the Midlife Clinic at OHSU, Adams will talk about which foods are most effective at preventing diseases and strengthening the body in "Power of the Plate: Creating Health and Healthy Eating." Adams will also talk about "The Power of Hormones" and their increasing use as a medical treatment.

Patricia Archbold, D.N.Sc., R.N., and Barbara Stewart, Ph.D.
Arnold and Stewart are with the School of Nursing and will discuss "Working with Our Aging Parents."

Susan Butterworth, Ph.D., M.S., and Lydia Collins, M.D.
Butterworth, director of OHSU Wellness Services, and Collins, obstetrician, will present on "Herbs and Supplements, Help, Hype or Harm?"

Sonja Connor, R.D. and Cindy Francois, R.D.
Connor and Francois, registered dieticians in the School of Medicine, will tempt the palate with "Heart Healthy the Mediterranean and Asian Way."

Carol DeFrancesco, M.A., R.D., L.D.
A senior research associate and dietician in the Division of Health Promotion and Sports Medicine, DeFrancesco will debunk the meal-of-the-moment in "The Truth about Fad Diets."

Pamela Edwards, M.D.
OHSU Psychiatrist Edwards will help women manage their time better with a discussion of "Overload: Define, Delete and Delegate."

Linn Goldberg, M.D.
Director of Health Promotion and Sports Medicine and the OHSU Human Performance Laboratory, Goldberg will discuss the subject of his new book, "The Healing Power of Exercise." Goldberg was recently in the national spotlight with results on his ATLAS study, which showed how to decrease the use of steroids and drugs in high school football players.

Meg Hayes, M.D.
An assistant professor of family medicine, Hayes will answer the question "What Can Acupuncture Do for You?"

Kaatje Meeuws, R.D., and Lila Ojeda, R.D.
Dieticians Meeuws and Ojeda bring more healthy recipes in their talk "The Joy about Soy."

Eric Orwoll, M.D.
Director of the OHSU Bone and Mineral Clinic and an expert on the differences between osteoporosis in women and men, Orwoll will talk about "How to Save Those Bones."
