| Dentists of the Future Get a Head Start at OHSU 62 students explore dental careers at the OHSU Dental Careers Institute Portland, Ore. - For 33 years Oregon Health Sciences University has provided high school students from Oregon and other parts of the United States with an opportunity to explore a career in dentistry. Students attending the Dental Careers Institute will live in OHSU dorms from June 27 through July 1 while they learn about the dental profession. Through lectures and hands-on activities, including doing an entire dental procedure on one of their peers, the participants are given an opportunity to explore dentistry as a possible profession. Dental students and faculty give their time to act as mentors during the DCI and many dentists provide scholarships for students from their local communities to attend. More than 88 percent of practicing dentists in Oregon graduated from the OHSU School of Dentistry, many of whom began their education at the DCI. This year Oregon's only dental school is celebrating 100 years of clinical excellence in dentistry and dental education. OHSU's School of Dentistry is proud of its national reputation for producing outstanding clinical dentists who pass their board exams with some of the highest scores in the country.
Students and faculty will be available for photographs and/or interviews at the following times:
