U.S. News Ranks OHSU Hospital Among Top U.S. Hospitals

Portland, Ore. - Four of OHSU's specialties are ranked among the best in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report's 1999 "America's Best Hospitals" guide.

U.S. News, with the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, assessed hospital care for 16 specialties. OHSU ranked among the top 50 for geriatric, gynecology, urology and cancer. The magazine did not rank primary care specialties, genetics or AIDS care.

The survey included about 2,000 hospitals, with 188 scoring high enough to be ranked. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was the top-ranked hospital on the list.

To determine the ranks, U.S. News used a mathematical model designed by NORC. The magazine's tenth annual ranking combined scores based on reputation, according to leading doctors in each field; mortality rates; and quality indicators, such as available technology and the ratio of nurses to beds.
