Dr Bhardwaj was recruited from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland to develop and implement a Neurosciences Critical Care Program at OHSU in 2006.
Dr. Bhardwaj completed his residency training in neurology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York (1989-1993), and a fellowship in Neurosciences Critical Care at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1993-1995), where he joined the faculty and rose through the ranks to become Vice Chairman in the Department of Neurology, Co-Director, Neurosciences Critical Care Division and Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurological Surgery and Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Bhardwaj has received numerous national awards, has lectured and presented extensively at scientific meetings nationally and internationally. He has authored more than 130 publications, including original research articles, invited reviews, editorials, book chapters and has edited four books. He serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals, including: Stroke, the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, Critical Care Medicine. He is presently the Chair of the Brain Study Section of the National American Heart Association and continues to serve as a member of several study sections for the National Institutes of Health. He is an elected Fellow of the American Heart Association and American College of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Bhardwaj's laboratory research focuses on understanding pathophysiological mechanisms of ischemic neuronal injury and evolution of edema accompanying ischemic stroke, pharmacological neuroprotection in ischemic stroke and osmotherapy in brain injury. His research endeavors have been funded continuously over the past 12 years by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Stroke Association and the American Heart Association.

Dr. Koerner completed her medical school training at the Albert-Ludwigs University, Freiberg, Germany (1990-1997) and completed a residency in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (1997-2003) at the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany.
Dr. Koerner has completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology & Peri-Operative Medicine at OHSU (2003-2006) and more recently has functioned as a clinical fellow in Intensive Care Medicine. Her research interests include hormone replacement and inflammation in cerebral ischemia, astrocytic/neuronal interactions in neuroprotection and gender differences in neuronal cell death. She has gained recognition for her research endeavors and was recently awarded the John D. Michenfelder New Investigator Award from the Society for Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care.
