MD/PhD Requirements

For admission to the MD/PhD program the applicant must show evidence of potential for excellent performance in both the MD and PhD programs and a strong commitment to a career in academic medicine.

The curriculum for the combined degree program is designed to allow student to complete both degrees within a six to eight year period. Ordinarily, students take the two year preclinical basic science courses in the medical curriculum, comlete the PhD thesis in the next three to four years and finish with clinical rotations in the last year and a half. However, the actual time needed depends on the individual student's rate of pregress in fulfilling the requirements for both the MD and PhD degrees. This format allows MD/PhD students to perform laboratory rotations and take graduate student courses during their first two years. The summers after each of the first two years are spent doing research rotations, so that students can choose and advisor and a department for ther thesis research.
