Build a Palm/Pocket PC from Scratch
-By Christine Kelso, MD, MPH
For: residents, faculty, and medical students at OHSU
These are my top recommendations. If you download all of these items you will have all of the essentials plus a few fun extras. Note – all software is FREE unless noted.
- Epocrates or Micromedex:
- www.epocrates.com - ePocrates Rx is free EXCEPT that they sell our aggregate info (not personal info) to pharmaceutical companies. Also recommend downloading associated software such as MDRD calc.
- Micromedex for the PDA. OHSU customer number (required for download). Call the library for assistance.
- Hopkins antibiotic guide: www.hopkins-abxguide.org – free antibiotic guide with excellent, user-friendly format that is frequently updated.
- MD Predict (an EBM guide for topics such as PE, perioperative risk, Ranson’s criteria, etc): http://www.mssm.edu/medicine/general-medicine/ebm/CPR/palm/cprPalm1.html
- TIMI – calculate
a TIMI score and look up guidelines for ACS on the fly: www.tFriday August 3, 2007e and metabolic
management (free, requires iSilo): http://www.meistermed.com/isilodepot/index.htm
- Dermmeister – Derm atlas, requires 6MB of space but excellent resource (free, requires iSilo): http://www.meistermed.com/isilodepot/index.htm
- ECG palm brain (free but requires iSilo) – approach to ECGs with examples:
- Eponyms (a very long list, and a fun tool): http://eponyms.net
- MedCalc (I like this better than MedMath, the tool that comes with Epocrates): http://medcalc.med-ia.net
- EBM calculator and tables: http://www.cebm.utoronto.ca/
- ATP III guidelines: http://www.acponline.org/pda/clinical_references.htm
- JNC VII guidelines: http://www.acponline.org/pda/clinical_references.htm
- UCSF house officer handbook (free but requires iSilo):
- USPSTF guidelines: http://www.acponline.org/pda/clinical_references.htm
- PDAccess: Specific for OHSU. Download labs and reports from LCR. Can only download by attending of record – most useful when on the wards rather than consults. To download the software (hint – you must be on ozone – suggest downloading to a jump (usb) drive then uploading to the computer you sync your PDA with): http://ozone/itg/training/pdaccess/index.shtml
Location of Clarinet PDAccess Synchronization Devices:
http://ozone/itg/training/pdaccess/locations.shtml- www.amion.com - download schedule for the year
- iSilo: This is a reader program which allows you to read some of the software above and much more. It is the only program currently on my PDA that I paid for ($19.99). You can get a basic version for free (doesn’t allow hyperlinks), and there is also a trial version at www.palmgear.com or www.isilo.com.
