About Us

Thomas G. Cooney MD, Residency Program Director

The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Oregon Health & Science University emphasizes a thorough exposure to the practice of internal medicine and an excellence in medical education in a collegial atmosphere. The training program offers intensive experience in a variety of inpatient and ambulatory settings, and our residents are able to tailor their education to achieve a diverse array of career goals throughout academic and private practice medicine. The majority of training takes place in the OHSU Hospital and Clinics and the adjacent Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). There are also important community based experiences at Kaiser Permanente, Providence Medical Center, and a variety of other community locations during the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years.

The Department of Medicine emphasizes academic excellence throughout the training experience. Learning environments balance the personal and professional needs of our housestaff. Relationships between residents and faculty are collegial, supportive, and lead to optimal mentorship opportunities. The faculty is strongly committed to excellence in clinical care, resident and student education, and clinical and basic science research.

Within the training program, there are 30 PGY-1 positions and 60 PGY-2 and PGY-3 positions and three chief medical residents (PGY-4).

Career Pathways

We offer career pathways in both categorical and primary care tracks. Newly matched interns are invited to complete a career planning survey before arriving for internship. Information from this survey determines which residents are given a categorical vs. primary care track schedule. Residents may "track" in or out of a track, creating an opportunity to better tailor rotations and experiences to meet their future goals and plans.

ABIM Research Pathway

The Department of Medicine supports the research pathway of the American Board of Internal Medicine. This pathway permits a resident to satisfy training requirements for certification in Internal Medicine with two years of clinical training and two years of research training. An applicant interested in this pathway applies for the internal medicine residency program through ERAS and if accepted then applies for the research pathway during their intern year.

Couples Match

We actively participate in and support the couples match. We currently have couples who are both in our program or one is in another program at OHSU.
