As an homage to the Body Worlds 3 exhibit now open at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, OHSU Historical Collections & Archives has installed a new display in the Main Library lobby: Anatomy at the Bleeding Edge. As usual, the exhibit brings together materials from our historical image, book, and museum collections, this time to highlight the history of anatomy and anatomical teaching at OHSU.

Notable items include:

  • Reconstitutable human aorta
  • Plasticized human heart and coronary artery structure
  • The Bourgery Atlas
  • Da Vinci drawings
  • Sketches from the Clarice Ashworth Francone Collection
  • Images from Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica

Angle Papers to History of Dentistry Collection

OHSU Historical Collections & Archives has recently received a monumental new work in the history of orthodontics: The world of Edward Hartley Angle, MD, DDS : his letters, accounts and patents (Boston: E. H. Angle Education and Research Foundation, 2007). Compiled and edited by Sheldon Peck of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, this four-volume set of the edited papers of the Society's namesake will become an invaluable resource for scholars interested in the development of the field.

Angle, who has been called the "Harvey Cushing of orthodontics," was the first dentist to specialize in and teach orthodontics. Former University of Oregon Dental School Dean Harold Noyes, who was also longtime editor of the journal Angle Orthodontist, originally gave the Angle papers to the Society. In appreciation for OHSU's role in the publication of the papers, this set has been donated by the Society to the History of Dentistry Collection.

The History of Dentistry Collection is located in the History of Dentistry Room on the third floor in the Library Administration area. Access to the collection is by appointment only; requests for appointments and questions about the collection can be directed to Sara Piasecki, History of Medicine Librarian, at 503-418-2287 or piasecki@ohsu.edu.

New exhibit: "A Return From Oblivion: Portland's First Neurosurgeon"

OHSU Historical Collections & Archives announces our latest major exhibit: "A Return From Oblivion: Portland's First Neurosurgeon, A.J. McLean.". Created by Archivist Karen Peterson, the display showcases the brief but brilliant career of this controversial character.

A graduate of Reed College, McLean received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins and his neurosurgical training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital with the specialty's founding father, Harvey Cushing. After a fellowship in Breslau, Germany, with prominent neurosurgeon Otfried Foerster, McLean returned to Portland where he opened a private practice and joined the faculty of the University of Oregon Medical School. Brash, disrespectful and hot-headed, he gained admirers as well as detractors. When he died in a car accident in December of 1938 (which some claimed was suicide), he left a will that gained national attention for its somewhat unusual clauses: "...To 95 percent of Portland's medical practitioners and their ethics, and the whole local organized medical profession, a lusty, rousing belch. To Portland's thieving patients, the haphazard care they will receive for their chiseling tawdriness....To my name, oblivion."

After seventy years of getting his wish, McLean is being resurrected. Come witness his return, and get a glimpse of the motivations and ambitions of this enigmatic man.

The exhibit, now on display in the the third floor lobby of the OHSU Library in the BICC, will remain up through the end of May 2007. For questions on the exhibit or other collections, please contact Sara Piasecki, History of Medicine Librarian, at piasecki@ohsu.edu or 503-418-2287.

In addition, a minor exhibit has been set on display near the Main Library book drop, just inside the lobby entrance. "Beautiful Bindings, or, What E-Books Lack" encourages a celebration of carrier over content. Come see some of the pretty books from the History of Medicine Collection.

Did you know? Software licenses available through Library Administration

Did you know that OHSU employees can purchase licenses for MSOffice 2003 Professional, SPSS and SAS from Library Administration? License agreements and licensing details are accessible at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/software/, and linked directly from the Library's top page.

MSOffice is a bundle of Microsoft’s most popular programs including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint. SPSS and SAS are both statistical analysis programs that are mainly used by researchers. Prices for software licenses through OHSU are much less expensive than buying the retail version or a license directly through SPSS or SAS.

If you have questions about these licenses that the Software Licensing page does not answer, please contact Patrick Kearns at kearnsp@ohsu.edu, 503-494-6029.

Finding articles at OHSU Library now easier

When you go into Ovid or PubMed and cannot find the full-text of your article, where do you turn? For a long time the OHSU Library has offered a purple "OHSU WebBridge" button which you could click on to find other links that could potentially lead you to your full text. However, most people we spoke to during our usability testing in Fall 2006 were not sure what this "OHSU WebBridge" button could do and once they arrived at the WebBridge screen they found it confusing.

Based on your collective feedback we have changed how this screen looks and renamed this resource as "Find It@OHSU Library". When you see this button in Ovid, Pubmed, Web of Science or other resources, clicking on it will get you to a screen that looks something like this:

Picture of screen with full text links

These screens now have a cleaner interface with more understandable terminology and less library jargon. If you do not see any links to full-text on the "Find It@OHSU Library" screen you will see links to both the OHSU Library catalog, in which you can search to see if we have your item in print, and to the links for requesting your item through interlibrary loan, similar to the screen below.

Picture of screen with no full text links

If you have questions about the process of how to search for or access journal articles or other resources at the OHSU Library, or if you have suggestions about how we can continue to improve our services, please contact us at library@ohsu.edu, 503-494-3462.

Did you know? Drug Effectiveness Review Project

Did you know that the OHSU Center for Evidence-based Policy and the Evidence-based Practice Center are both participants in the Drug Effectiveness Review Project (DERP)? The Drug Effectiveness Review Project is a collaboration of public and private organizations, including thirteen states, that have joined together to provide systematic evidence-based reviews of the comparative effectiveness and safety of drugs in many widely used drug classes and to apply the findings to inform public policy and related activities.

The purpose of the DERP reports is to make available information regarding the comparative effectiveness and safety profiles of different drugs within pharmaceutical classes. Reports are not usage guidelines, nor should they be read as an endorsement of, or recommendation for, any particular drug, use or approach. Oregon Health & Science University does not recommend or endorse any guideline or recommendation developed by users of these reports. The Final Reports include the key questions addressed in the report, inclusion criteria, methods, results and synthesis, evidence tables, figures, and appendices. Reports are updated regularly.

Access more full-text articles in PubMed

Did you know that you can access more full-text articles by using OHSU's access to PubMed?

PubMed, a database of the biomedical journal literature from the National Library of Medicine, is freely available to anyone with access to the Internet. However, if you go directly to this resource at http://www.pubmed.gov, few full-text articles are available.

To obtain access to full-text purchased by OHSU, you must use the OHSU link to PubMed. To use PubMed through OHSU's full-text enhanced access, mouse over "Databases" on the main library page and click on "PubMed - OHSU access" (see graphic below) or bookmark the OHSU PubMed link at https://liboff.ohsu.edu/login?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=ohsulib_fft_ndi&otool=ohsulib.

You have spoken and the Library responds!

The OHSU Library conducted usability testing on its Web site from October-December 2006, surveying over 200 people, conducting 37 one-on-one usability tests, and meeting with 7 medical students. Based on all the amazing feedback you have collectively given us over the last few months, we will implement a number of changes on the Library Web site to make it better for you.

Updates to Library Web site: Phase 1
The first of these changes can be seen in the new top Library page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library. Phase 1 of our Web site makeover includes:

  1. Consolidation of Journals and E-Journals
No longer do people looking for journals have to wonder if they are looking in the right place (journals, e-journals, electronic resources, etc.). There is just one Journals link on the top page.

  2. New E-books section
The links to electronic books used to be buried under a now-defunct area called E-Resources, but now has its own link.

  3. New Research Help section
People asked for more direct links to tutorials, etc.; this section is part of our effort to do that.

  4. Hours on the bottom
People asked for the hours and directions links to be more towards the bottom of the page.

  5. Less clutter on top
People asked for less clutter towards the top of the page, so the links here have been clarified and cut down.

  6. New "Help" page
Linked from the top page and available directly at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/help.shtml.

  7. Addition of links to citation matchers
Linked from the journals section and available directly at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/citation.shtml.

Updates to the Library Web site: Phase 2

Other changes will be coming in the near future to the online catalog (http://catalogs.ohsu.edu) based on your collective feedback. These longer-term changes also will include being able to search the catalog directly from the top page and having information grouped in more obvious ways using one of the new OHSU Web templates that will be coming out in the next year. See http://libweb.uoregon.edu for an example of a catalog search embedded in a library's top-level page.

A more in-depth write-up of what we found in this study will be available in the coming months. Feedback given to improve the Library Web site always is appreciated. Please contact the OHSU Library if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about how we are changing the Library Web site or services.

Saving Searches in Ovid

Have you ever crafted a complex Ovid search that gave you great results and then had to attempt to recreate the same search later? There is an easier way. Ovid allows you to quickly save your searches by creating a personal account. A personal Ovid account lets you save searches in a series of easy steps.

Creating a Personal Account
Creating a personal account is as simple as choosing a username, password and providing Ovid with an email address. Detailed screen shots showing how to create your personal account are available here: http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovid/personalaccount.shtml#part1

Saving a Search
To save a search you’ll need to log into your personal account, give your search a name, and designate whether you want Ovid to save the search temporarily, permanently or provide you with e-mail updates when new published articles are retrieved by your search. Go to http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovid/personalaccount.shtml#part2 for more details on how to save your search.

Retrieving a Saved Search
Once you’ve saved a search, you can retrieve it by logging into your personal account. You’ll then identify, select and run (activate) the saved search in the database that you currently have open. More information is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovid/personalaccount.shtml#part3.

NOTE: You should always run saved searches in the databases in which they were originally saved. If the search you saved was created in Medline retrieving and running the same search in CINAHL will likely be ineffective.

Additional Ovid information is available on the tutorials and guides page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovidresources.shtml and Ovid class descriptions and dates are listed at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/classes.shtml.

If you have further questions about how to work with Ovid to find the information you need, please contact the OHSU Library Reference Department at 503-494-3462 or email refer@ohsu.edu and a reference librarian would be happy to work with you.

New Exhibit: Valentine Prichard and the People's Institute

OHSU Historical Collections & Archives announces our latest exhibit: "Hope Blooms Under a Benevolent Moon: Valentine Prichard and the People's Institute." Organized by Archivist Karen Peterson, the display highlights the history of the People's Institute, precursor to our modern Outpatient Clinic.

Originally organized in 1904 by Valentine Prichard, Portland schoolteacher, and well-to-do women of the social elite, the People's Institute was remarkable for its provision of education and healthcare to the poor, its development of the first city parks, and its focus on settlement work. The Institute first became affiliated with the University of Oregon Medical School in 1909, and the Portland Free Dispensary was opened in 1910 with fourteen UOMS faculty members on staff. In 1913, medical students began to make mandatory rounds through the Dispensary, and by 1931 the Medical School had taken complete financial control of the operation. The facility was then moved to Marquam Hill, where it was renamed Outpatient Clinic.

The exhibit, now on display in the the third floor lobby of the OHSU Library in the BICC, will remain up through the end of March 2007. For questions on the exhibit or other collections, please contact Sara Piasecki, History of Medicine Librarian, at piasecki@ohsu.edu or 503-418-2287.

Free trial to SPIE Digital Library

The SPIE Digital Library is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics. Over 200,000 technical papers from the SPIE journals and conference proceedings are available, including full coverage from 1990 to the present. This includes the SPIE journals Proceedings of SPIE, Optical Engineering, Journal of Electronic Imaging, Journal of Biomedical Optics, and Journal of Microlithography, Microfabrication, and Microsystems.

Conference volumes from number 1200 are available for a total of over 5000 conference volumes of the SPIE. New papers from SPIE journals and proceedings go online as they complete the necessary approvals and production so e-publication precedes print publication.

You can access this free trial during January by going to the OHSU Library databases pages and looking up SPIE or going directly to https://liboff.ohsu.edu/login?url=http://spiedl.org for access from on or off campus. Off campus use requires a valid barcode. A quick start guide to the resource is available at http://www.ogi.edu/library/databases/SPIE.pdf.

This trial period is an evaluation time to determine whether we should add this resource to our collections. Send your comments to Carol Resco (Library Director, OGI School of Science & Engineering Library, 503-748-1060, rescoc@ohsu.edu) by the end of January to help us in this decision.
