Online access to Wiley Handbook of Current and Emerging Drug Therapies
OHSU users now have online access to the Wiley Handbook of Current and Emerging Drug Therapies. The Wiley Handbook of Current and Emerging Drug Therapies supports the information needs of research managers and scientists working in drug discovery environments in academia, industry, and government. A carefully structured program of online updating will ensure that the Handbook reflects the latest information on new molecular entities, clinical trials, drug approvals, and post-approval studies of new drugs.
The addition of this e-book to our collection complements two other Wiley e-books, Online Encyclopedia of Genetics, Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics and Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering, that were added to the OHSU collection last summer.
With articles written by established leaders in the field as well as by rising stars, the Online Encyclopedia of Genetics, Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics is an essential reference tool for all members of genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and bioinformatics teams, from students, to post-docs, to senior scientists.
The Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering is ideal for students, research scientists, and experts. Articles are included in the following areas: Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Education, Biomedical Devices and Instrumentation, Human Performance and Reverse Engineering, and Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Engineering.

New Exhibit on Herbert Merton Greene
OHSU Historical Collections & Archives proudly presents the exhibit Through His Eyes: The World of Herbert Merton Greene. The exhibit features images, documents, certificates and licenses, artifacts, and publications from the Herbert Merton Greene Collection that highlight the themes of his long, successful career as a physician and researcher, his commitment to the military, and his involvement in Free Masonry and the Anglo-Saxon Christian Association. Complementing the collection is the WWI military uniform worn by Dr. Greene, a generous loan by the Greene family.A 1904 graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School, Greene went on to serve at Camp Lewis in WWI, teach and maintain a private practice in Portland, and run a successful side business out of his home. Among other accomplishments, he developed the Greene special puncture needle, designed to minimize trauma from spinal taps.
Questions or comments about the exhibit or the collection can be directed to Sara Piasecki, History of Medicine Librarian (503-418-2287 or piasecki@ohsu.edu ) or Karen Peterson, Archivist (503-494-3239 or peterska@ohsu.edu ).

Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) added to OHSU Library catalog
Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) library has joined the library catalog hosted by the Oregon Health & Science University libraries and shared with the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM). With the addition of WSCC’s holdings, this catalog is one of the most comprehensive and unique medical literature repositories in North America. Library patrons can now search across the catalogs of all OHSU affiliated campuses, NCNM and WSCC with one mouse click. Access to medical literature and informatics, whether traditional or alternative/complementary, has never been easier.Users can search each school’s collection individually or search the entire collection. They can also request materials from any of the collections online and choose the most convenient library for pick up. Participating libraries include the OGI School of Science & Engineering, Oregon National Primate Research Center, OHSU Main Library, NCNM and WSCC. With the extensive, in-depth collections of each school, the collective catalog now covers medicine, nursing, chiropractic, massage, dentistry, primatology, medical informatics, natural medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, business, computer science, and environmental engineering. The catalog can be accessed via links on the web sites of the participating libraries or directly from http://catalogs.ohsu.edu.
The combined catalog runs on Millennium software from Innovative Interfaces, Inc. The project was managed jointly by Janet Tapper, Director of Learning Resources at WSCC, and Janet Crum, Head, Library Systems & Cataloging, OHSU Library; it was funded in part by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant. Under federal legislation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, through the Library Services and Technology Act of 1996, provides funds to State Libraries using a population-based formula. These federal funds are used to support activities that use technology to share information. The Oregon State Library awarded the LSTA funds to Western States Chiropractic College in October of 2005. The catalog merger was completed in August of 2006.

Easy Access to World's Largest Library Network
The OHSU Library recently added Worldcat.org search functionality to the OHSU Library catalog. Worldcat.org, the world's largest library network with over 71 million records, allows you to search many libraries for an item, then locate the item in a library nearby.
Worldcat.org is similar to the Summit catalog to which OHSU-affiliated users already have access, but differs from Summit in that the WorldCat.org listings also include listings of items in public libraries and also include reviews. In addition, WorldCat.org breaks down keyword search results by author, content, format, language and year, better enabling you to navigate to your desired information. Although you cannot request books to be delivered to the OHSU Library in WorldCat.org as you can through Summit, WorldCat searches can be useful for seeing what books exist on a certain topic and also if there is a copy available at a library nearby.
To see more information about what you can do with Worldcat.org, visit the What is WorldCat? page or contact the OHSU Library if you have questions about how to best utilize this newly accessible resource.
To find Worldcat.org, go to the Library catalog (http://catalogs.ohsu.edu) and look for this searchbox towards the bottom of the page:

Public Health Nurses Web Page
OHSU Library reference librarians, Dolores Judkins and Steve Teich, have been working on a project with public health nurses in Oregon to produce a web site specifically for them.Through an award from the National Library of Medicine, the librarians were able to meet with focus groups of public health nurses in Portland and Pendleton to design and develop the site. Early in 2006 the page was available for comments and many nurses responded, requesting additional links be added and giving comments about the site. There have been a number of sessions around the state to introduce the web site to groups of public health nurses, and the response has been uniformly positive.
The site is now available for anyone to use, but continued input from the nurses is encouraged and the librarians will continue to update the site as needed. The web site is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/publichealth/.
If you have further comments or questions about this site, please contact Dolores Judkins, judkinsd@ohsu.edu.

Number of OHSU Authored Papers Almost Doubles
Over the last five years, OHSU authored journal publications have nearly doubled (Source: search performed in ISI Web of Science database). In 2005, OHSU authors published 2,392 journal articles which was an 87% increase compared to the 1,280 articles published in the year 2001. As would be expected, the number of papers referenced by OHSU authors increased from 23,823 to 64,363 articles per year over this same time period.Development of a joint electronic journal collection by the OHSU, OGI and ONPRC Library Staff has supported all faculty, staff and students during this tremendous time of growth. Full text downloads of electronic journal articles have increased 10 fold from 131,302 articles in the year 2001 to 1,416,641 articles in 2005. To purchase this number of articles directly from publishers would have cost OHSU departments approximately 30-40 million dollars.
Access to all print and electronic journals is available via the library catalog at http://catalogs.ohsu.edu/search~S5 . For more information on how journals are selected and the annual review process please go to the OHSU Collection Development page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/depts/colldevcomm/ .
To recommend the purchase of a journal, book or other library material, please complete the form at https://www.ohsu.edu/library/purrequest.shtml .

Herbert Merton Greene Collection Acquired
OHSU Historical Collections & Archives is pleased to announce our most recent acquisition: the Herbert Merton Greene Collection.
A 1904 graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School, Dr. H.M. Greene was recently profiled in the School of Medicine's magazine Focus (Fall 2003, vol. 14, no. 2, p. 18-19). In addition to serving as chief surgeon at Camp Lewis during World War I, Greene had a private practice in rural Lacrosse, WA, before returning to Portland in 1918. From 1918 until his retirement in 1957, Greene taught at the medical school, maintained a private practice in the Medical Arts Building, and ran a small business out of his home, selling barbicide and pharmaceutical preparations. Greene was also very active in the community with organizations such as the Freemasons and the Anglo-Saxon Christian Association. Among other accomplishments, Greene developed the Greene special puncture needle, which was designed to minimize trauma associated with spinal taps. Greene died in 1962 at the age of 87 after a long struggle with deteriorating health and diminished eyesight--the aftereffects of radiation exposure from his time as operator of the first x-ray machine on the West Coast, back in 1898.
The collection includes photographs, correspondence, research, patient records, certificates and awards, medical instruments and equipment, and other personal effects. Also included are some materials related to Greene's second wife, Jenny Todd Booth, who was chief nurse at Camp Lewis during the First World War. The collection was donated by the Greene's granddaughter, Karen Kullberg Faw.
Questions about the collection or Dr. Greene can be addressed to History of Medicine Librarian, Sara Piasecki (piasecki@ohsu.edu) or to Archivist Karen Peterson (peterska@ohsu.edu).

Reading E-journals Online - Looking beyond the PDF Format
After you locate an electronic journal article, you will need to select between an Abstract, HTML or PDF format to view the article. Selecting the PDF format may be the best choice if you want to print the article, however, if you are reading the article online you may want to try a different format.
- The HTML format often has links that help you locate additional information or references.
- Check out supplementary information that could include lecture notes, data, movies or other multimedia materials (i.e. Nature and Cell have this format for some articles).
- Articles in the Biochemical Journal linked at http://catalogs.ohsu.edu/record=b1102383 include a newly developed format called EESI-View. According to the publisher, Portland Press, "Enhanced electronic serials interface (EESI)-View was developed to address the shortcomings of existing HTML articles which were traditionally flat, linear representations of the printed version with the entire article, including figures and tables, constituting one HTML "page". The new screen presentation allows you to read the text and see the figure at the same time.
The electronic journal environment is rapidly improving and you may want to explore the new methods of presenting scientific articles on the web. If you have any questions or exciting examples of improvements beyond the printed article, please contact Diane Carroll, Collection Development Librarian, carroldi@ohsu.edu.

New Resources from the OHSU Library
The OHSU Library has recently added a variety of new resources for educational support.
The Bates' Visual Guide to Physical Examination is a comprehensive way to learn and refine physical examination skills using the well-known Bates' method. Each lesson is dedicated to a specific body system and includes a step-by-step demonstration of appropriate examination techniques. This 4th edition includes 18 DVDs which are on reserve in the Library and can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
Sets of flash cards for study purposes are now available in the library. Sets currently available include pharmacology, pathology, Netter's anatomy, anatomy of orofacial structures, muscle anatomy, and basic arrhythmias. These are available as reserve items that can be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Further sets are planned, and to get a quick list of what is available, a keyword search in the OHSU catalog on "flash cards" will bring up a list of what the library currently owns.
Exam Master Online is test preparation for the USMLE and board exams. Users are able to study at their own pace, discover their weak areas, and work specifically on those items. It includes timed tests and can be individualized for each user. It can be accessed both on and off campus. The on-campus link is http://www.exammaster2.com/wdsentry/ohsu.htm.
If you have questions about any of these resources, please contact Dolores Judkins, Head of Reference, judkinsd@ohsu.edu, 503-494-3478.

Library Journal Cancellation Survey
The Library staff is asking for your help in deciding whether to cancel about 160 journal titles. Some of these journals may be important to your work at OHSU but are being considered for cancellation because the library staff is unable to acquire use data. The survey starts with five multiple choice questions about how you obtain articles not available through the library, next is a question about what journals you would recommend the library add, and then a final section asking you to evaluate your use of the journals being considered for cancellation in 2007.
The survey will be available from February 27 to March 17, 2006 at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=531621721736.
Titles under consideration for cancellation fall into seven broad categories (Basic Sciences, Behavior Sciences, Child Development and Rehabilitation, Dentistry, Library/Information Science, Medicine and Nursing). OHSU faculty, staff and student use data collected will be linked to each category. You will be asked to review only the categories in your area of expertise. It is estimated the survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete depending on how many categories you review.
Respondents who complete the survey and give their name and contact information will be included in a random drawing for a $25 Powell’s Book Store gift certificate, three T-shirts and 2 small radios.
For questions or problems with the survey, please contact Diane Carroll, carroldi@ohsu.edu, 503-494-6659, OHSU Library Collection Development Committee, Chair

ILL Express service now available to ONPRC Library users
The ONPRC Library now is accepting requests for photocopies or interlibrary loans through ILL Express. This service will make it easier for patrons to order articles selected from Ovid and PubMed searches and have them delivered to their desktops. The ONPRC Library will continue to accept requests for photocopies or interlibrary loans via paper and email. However, ILL Express is a faster and more efficient option, particularly for those preferring electronic delivery. All ONPRC Library services are free to ONPRC and VGTI patrons.
ILL Express has been available to OHSU Main and OGI Library users since 2003. The addition of ONPRC Library to the service completes the installation of this service at all OHSU libraries.

Library Journal Additions and Cancellations for 2006
For the third consecutive year, the OHSU Library canceled approximately $100,000 of library resources to cover journal inflation and to release budget dollars to purchase new journal titles. In 2006, 7% of current subscriptions are available only in print, 33% are available in print and electronic, and 60% of current subscriptions are available online only. The ability to save dollars by canceling print in favor of electronic format no longer exists as the print format is the archival copy and no electronic archives are available for 33% of our subscriptions.A summary of 2006 journal selection priorities and criteria for adding or canceling is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/depts/colldevcomm/colldevcomm2006.shtml. This page will link to a detailed listing of title changes made in all OHSU library collections.
Some of the highlights are:
- 75 titles are being added to the collection including the Nature Materials and four new Nature Clinical Practice titles; institutional access to the Chronicles of Higher Education; and two lab manuals in the Current Protocol series: Microbiology and Pharmacology.
- The complete collection of Annual Reviews (online only) have been added as well as the ScienceDirect Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology back volume collection.
- About 270 titles formerly received in print and electronic format are available online only in 2006; Nature Publishing titles have been renewed in electronic format and canceled in print except for Nature.
- 45 low use or high costs per use journal subscriptions have been canceled.
The Collection Development Committee will be seeking input from OHSU faculty, staff and students about cancellation and additions for 2007 in an OHSU Library Journal Survey that will be announced soon. Please send us requests for new library material purchases any time by completing the form at https://www.ohsu.edu/library/purrequest.shtml.
If you have any questions or would like detailed information on how decisions were made, please contact Diane Carroll, Collection Development Librarian, carroldi@ohsu.edu.

NIH Clinical Alert on HIV/AIDS
International HIV/AIDS Trial Finds Continuous Antiretroviral Therapy Superior to Episodic TherapyThe National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced that enrollment into a large international HIV/AIDS trial comparing continuous antiretroviral therapy with episodic drug treatment guided by levels of CD4+ cells has been stopped. Enrollment was stopped because those patients receiving episodic therapy had twice the risk of disease progression (the development of clinical AIDS or death), the major outcome of the study.

Free trial of EXAM MASTER ONLINE
The Library is currently running a trial of Exam Master OnLine. This is an interactive test preparation database for the USMLE and Board Exams."EXAM MASTER ONLINE is a newly updated USMLE and board preparation and review tool that provides access to thousands of basic and clinical sciences questions. The completely revised interface allows for quick and easy navigation, and provides students with the ability to create very customized practice exams and study blocks.
In November, EXAM MASTER completely revised the testing interface to closely match what is actually used on the USMLE exam. This new test mode interface has excellent navigational tools, and includes other features found on the exam including the ability to attach notes to each question."
This system is in use at over 40 academic health centers and teaching hospitals as both a way to prepare for the USMLE and as a curriculum support tool to help students identify their strong and weak areas.
The trial will be ongoing through February 28th.
To try it out, go to http://www.exammaster2.com/wdsentry/ohsu.htm. You will have to register the first time you use it, as it will set up your specific profile.
Please send any comments about Exam Master to Dolores Judkins at judkinsd@ohsu.edu.

NIH Clinical Alert on Advanced Ovarian Cancer
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, on January 5 issued an announcement encouraging treatment with anticancer drugs via two methods, after surgery, for women with advanced ovarian cancer. The combined methods, which deliver drugs into a vein and directly into the abdomen, extend overall survival for women with advanced ovarian cancer by about a year.Read the full text of the alert at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/alerts/ovarian_ip_chemo.html.

Converting departmental libraries from physical to electronic
Closing your Department Library? The Library staff has helped several departments with the conversion of their departmental libraries from physical to electronic collections. Depending on the publisher, subscriptions not being purchased by the library may be added to library electronic journal licenses with the department continuing to pay for the subscription.
Advantages are:
- Library provides access to and maintains ejournal links and holdings in the catalog.
- Library adds seamless linking from reference databases to articles.
- More back years may be available; Price may be lower and annual inflation. may be capped on the library contract (we maintain over 100 license agreement for electronic resources).
- Dollars spent by your department will benefit the entire OHSU community and if titles are on the Ovid platform, you will benefit all Oregon licensed health professionals.
- We are specialists in electronic journal licensing, setting up ejournal access and troubleshooting access problems.
Disadvantages are:
The Library purchases titles most used by all OHSU faculty, students and staff. If your department has a specialized interest and has been purchasing subscriptions not held by the library, this may be a way to improve the library collection and service to your department faculty, students or staff.
- Sometimes the price is higher because all subscriptions must be institutional and not individual.
- It takes a few months to get the subscription set up.
