Library adds clinical titles to online journal collection
The OHSU Library now provides access to all Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins titles available in the OVID Total Access Collection. OHSU’s Ovid users now have access to the complete Current Opinion series as part of the 266-title collection. A list of title and access links can be found at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/issnsdd/sddsearch.cfm?searchterm=total+access.This product was purchase as part of a consortial agreement with the University of Washington Health Sciences Library. It is one of three 2005 consortial agreements the OHSU Library has negotiated for access to a publisher’s complete collection online. The Kluwer and Lippincott collections have been announced; one more collection will be announced when it is licensed and access added to the ejournal web page. These collections were obtained at a minimal cost and will bring depth and breadth to the collection but may only be available for 2005 depending on future negotiations.
The Library now has over 15,000 titles listed at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals/. The Library staff is migrating information on electronic journals into the catalog, so until that is completed, please continue to look both in the catalog for print materials and some electronic journals and the ejournal Web page for a comprehensive list of online titles. The OVID Total Access collection will be added to the catalog in January.

E-journals News – Nature, PloS, BioMed Central
Nature Methods, a new title from Nature Publishing, was launched on October 1, 2004. It is available on and off-campus from the library ejournal page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals/cfejsearch3.cfm?searchterm=nature+methods . Print issues will be added to the collection in January 2005.Nature Clinical Practice series will be launched in November 2004. Information about these titles can be found at http://www.nature.com/clinicalpractice/ . The four new Nature Clinical Practice titles: Cardiovascular Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Oncology, and Urology will be listed on the OHSU Library ejournal web page when they become available; print issues will be added to the collection in January 2005.
PloS Medicine, a new open access title from the Public Library of Science, will be available on October 19th. Advanced information on what will be available in the first issue can be found at http://www.plosmedicine.org/medicine/index.html . This title will be added to the ejournal web page later in October.
BioMed Central Membership. OHSU authors have taken advantage of the Library’s paid membership to BMC by publishing 18 papers since 2003. With BMC membership, paper charges of $500 are waived, articles are open access (free to all) and authors retain copyright. A list of all papers by OHSU authors can be found at http://www.biomedcentral.com/inst/36759 .
How do the impact factor of these open access titles compare to paid subscriptions? It takes three years for an ISI Impact Factor to be calculated. Impact factor is the average number of times an article in the journal has been cited. Impact factors are best evaluated in context of all other titles in that subject area. For example, BMC Cell Biology has an Impact Factor of 2.6. In the subject area of Cell Biology, the highest ranked title is Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology with an Impact factor of 35.041. In this subject area, BMC Cell Biology ranks 69 of 156 titles.
The OHSU Library subscribes to ISI Journal Citation Reports if interested in reviewing impact factors for other these titles within their subject area. http://www.ohsu.edu/library/databases/cfdbsearch.cfm?searchterm=journal+citation+re
Below are the titles and impact factor for journals currently indexed by ISI.

Young Men's Health Page Makes Debut
The OHSU Library has been proud of its Young Women's Health Page since it was created in 1999. In an attempt to continue our service to young people, we have just finished a partner site, Young Men's Health Page, found at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/teenhealth/youngmen/. This site is designed to bring together an evaluated list of health websites that will be helpful for young men as the grow up and face new challenges. The amount of health information available on the web for this particular audience is amazingly small. It is our hope that the Young Men's Health Page will provide physical, mental and sexual health information that young men will want and need. Please take a look!July 22, 2004

ILL Express Reaches Milestone
ILL Express, OHSU Libraries’ Document Delivery system, processed Transaction Number 50,000 on June 2. Since implementation of ILL Express in March, 2003, more than 1600 OHSU and OGI Library users have found the system easy and efficient to use. Users only need to enter personal information once when they sign up; delivery and payment preferences are easily modified for each request and users may track the status of their requests. The service most users rave about, however, is desktop delivery for articles. Once the article has been received at the Library, staff post the PDF file to the user’s account and send an email notification. The user can then log in and download the article from any computer anywhere in the world. Over 95% of ILL Express users take advantage of this service.
For more information about ILL Express on Marquam Hill, go to http://www.ohsu.edu/library/illiad/. Information on ILL Express at OGI’s Samuel L. Diack Library is posted at https://illiad.ohsu.edu/illiad/ogi/.

Advanced Search feature for Digital Resources Library
The OHSU Digital Resources Library is happy to announce added functionality to our Advanced Search feature.Did you know the DRL has multiple collections? Only two so far, but we're growing!
Go to http://drl.ohsu.edu and click on Advanced Search. At the bottom of the page, you'll see the search defaults to searching our two main collections, the OHSU DRL Main collection and OHSU Historical Collections & Archives (click off one or the other box to view collections individually). Previously, access to the Historical Collections & Archives involved going to a second window and then returning to the search screen.
In the upper area, the new search fields default to searching all fields in the collection(s). No more trying to decide what fields contain the information you're searching. Example: a search of "all the words" on "hospital" yields 66 pictures, both current and historical as well as many other images where the word "hospital" exists in the descriptive information. Our software is very literal and does high-powered string searching: "hospital" yields 66 results, "hospitals" yields 35 results.
We're happy to bring you this improved access to our OHSU Historical Collections & Archives.

Where did the electronic journal holdings go in the Main Library catalog?
Some electronic journal holdings have being removed from the catalog in preparation for Innovative Electronic Resource Management (ERM) module implementation. For example, the information about electronic journals for the New England Journal of Medicine today is as follows:
New England Journal of Medicine
Connect to http://www.nejm.orgA month ago you would have seen:
Connect to
1993-present; http://www.nejm.orgOver the next few months we will be testing ERM. The links above will be removed and a locator box containing the holdings, URL, and permitted rights and restrictions will be added.
During this transition period, please use the OHSU ejournal Web page for accurate holdings information http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals/. We know this is an inconvenience, but we need to put our efforts into implementing the new system rather than maintaining accurate ejournal holdings in two locations.
For additional information, please contact Diane Carroll, carroldi@ohsu.edu, Kristina Deshazo, deshazok@ohsu.edu, or Janet Crum, crumj@ohsu.edu. We appreciate your patience as we implement these changes.

Wireless Network Access Now Available in Main Library
Are you tired of waiting to use a library workstation? Do you have a laptop? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you will be happy to know that wireless access to the OHSU network and Internet is now available in the OHSU Main Library. To access either the Internet or the OHSU network, users must have an OHSU network account and compatible equipment. PC users must have a compatible PCMCIA wireless network card, while Mac users may use Airport 2.0. ITG’s wireless FAQ, http://helpdesk/viewpage.aspx?key_id=1251, includes detailed information on supported network interface cards, which can be purchased from the Edu-Tech Store on the first floor of the BICC. In the near future, users will be able to use any wireless card to access the Internet. Wireless access to OHSU resources and servers will continue to require the wireless cards specified by ITG.Instructions for configuring wireless access on PCs and Macs are available in the library. Please note that although library staff can provide some limited assistance, ITG provides all primary support for wireless networking. For further information contact the ITG helpdesk at 503 494-2222. Please also note that wireless devices other than laptops (e.g. PDAs) are not supported on OHSU’s wireless network.

Announcing Journal Additions and Cancellations for 2004
Library resources were canceled to meet budget requirements and no new monies were available to add new resources. About $100,000 of journal subscriptions were canceled to cover inflation (8 to 10%), to add a few new titles and to account for dramatic increases in electronic access costs. As OHSU increases in the number of employees and use of electronic journals, publishers are responding with increased prices for electronic access.
The selection priorities for 2004 were:
- Membership in BioMed Central, an open access publisher.
- Purchase electronic access to individual titles to gain archival access.
- Pay increased costs for electronic access to titles of high importance.
- Purchased electronic collections that added back volumes to the collection.
- Canceled the print format and subscribe online only for titles from Blackwell Synergy and Kluwer Online (165 titles).
- Cancel low use titles based on in-house and electronic usage as well as medium use titles with a high cost/use (64 titles)
- Cancel duplicates among the OHSU system libraries (18 titles).
For more details and a link to a list of add and canceled titles for 2004, please visit http://www.ohsu.edu/library/depts/colldevcomm/colldevcomm2004.shtml
For questions on the selection process or questions about specific titles, please contact Diane Carroll, Chair, Collection Development Committee at carroldi@ohsu.edu.

Remember OHSU is a BioMed Central Member
The BioMed Central Editorial Team asked us to remind you that, thanks to OHSU Library's BioMed Central membership, you have all of the benefits of publishing your research article in an open access journal without paying the usual article processing charge. This is true regardless of the number of papers you publish. BioMed Central publishes over 100 online journals, across the whole spectrum of biology and medicine. For a full list, please go to their website http://www.biomedcentral.com/browse/journals/ .When you submit your research to any of their journals, it will receive rigorous and rapid peer review. If your article is accepted:
- It will be accessible to anyone with an Internet connection - open access means no subscriptions or 'pay-per-view' charges for original research articles
- It will be securely and permanently archived in PubMed Central
- You will retain the copyright of your work, so you are free to print out copies of your article, email it to your colleagues, and/or post it on the web
- You will be able to view your article's access statistics, which average over 250 downloads per month per article
When submitting a manuscript, either via a journal home page or via their online submission system , you will be identified as belonging to a member institution and automatically granted an article processing charge waiver. If you are at home or at an external terminal when submitting your paper, you can still claim a waiver by stating your affiliation to your institution.
OHSU authors have published 20 articles via BioMed Central (see http://www.biomedcentral.com/inst/36759).
If you have any questions about the BioMed Central membership, please contact Diane Carroll at carroldi@ohsu.edu.

This class will compare and contrast the variety of Internet search sites out there and will provide hands-on exposure to these resources. This class has received rave reviews from previous participants. This class will be held from 2-3 P.M. on the following days:
- Friday, January 16
