New England Journal of Medicine access change
OHSU students, staff and employees will no longer need to locate and use a username/password to access article from the Massachusetts Medical Society Web site. IP network access to NEJM, added at the end of December 2003, is available from on-campus at http://content.nejm.org/. Off-campus access links can be found on the library electronic journal page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals .Additional features include:
- PDF format
- New articles posted every Wednesday at 5:00 EST
- 20 FREE Weekly CME exams online
- E-mail Table of Contents Alerts
The Library paid $5,400 to gain access to this Website for 2004. NEJM is free to all after 6 months. Approximately 32,000 articles were downloaded from this site over a previous 12 month period so we expect that this investment will be of value to OHSU in 2004.

Tough Decisions - AMA site license for electronic journal access
The Library has made some tough decisions that are going to affect the electronic journal collections. The AMA is requiring a costly site license for JAMA and the nine Archives. We have a committment to serve both OHSU faculty, students and staff and to support Oregon Health Professionals. We decided to keep the equally costly OVID access to JAMA and most of the Archives so that Oregon Health Professionals as well as OHSU employees will have access. As a result, of our decision, we lost access to the JAMA and the nine Archives from the AMA Web site as of November 10.
Please see the library electronic journals page for links to others sources of the AMA journals.
Please send comments and concerns about this decision to Diane Carroll, carroldi@ohsu.edu, Chair, OHSU Collection Development Committee, or to Jim Morgan, morgan@ohsu.edu, OHSU Library Director.

New Models for Scientific Publishing
In the last few years, several initiatives have been proposed to make some research results freely available. The rising cost of scientific journals has made access to scientific literature more difficult and expensive. This article briefly describes three initiatives to make more scientific literature freely available, along with a proposed law that, if passed, will dramatically change the way scientific literature is distributed.
PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/)
Developed and operated by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the National Library of Medicine, PubMed Central aims to create a permanent, free archive of journal literature in the life sciences. Participating publishers contribute articles in electronic form, while PubMed Central staff scan back issues of journals to make older articles available. All articles in PubMed Central are indexed in PubMed, with links from PubMed to the full text.BioMed Central (http://www.biomedcentral.com)
According to their Web site, "BioMed Central is an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research." BioMed Central currently publishes over 100 journals in a variety of biomedical disciplines, with all articles available free to anyone. All articles are peer-reviewed and contributed to PubMed Central; authors retain copyright. BioMed Central charges a publication fee of $500 per article, but because the OHSU Library holds an institutional membership, OHSU authors may publish in any BioMed Central journal free of charge.Public Library of Science (PloS) (http://www.publiclibraryofscience.org)
Founded in 2001, PloS is, according to their Web site, "a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource." They seek to usher in "a new business model for scientific publishing... that treats the costs of publication as the final integral step of the funding of a research project." To that end, they charge $1500 per manuscript, due upon acceptance. The first PloS journal, PloS Biology, just launched in October 2003 and is available at http://biology.plosjournals.org/. PloS Medicine is scheduled for mid-2004, with additional journals in other fields and medical specialties planned thereafter.Public Access to Science Act (HR 2613)
On June 26, 2003, Rep. Martin Sabo (D-Minn.) introduced HR 2613, the Public Access to Science Act. If passed, it would amend Title 17 of the United States Code, "to exclude from copyright protection works resulting from scientific research substantially funded by the Federal Government."We in the OHSU Library support efforts to make scientific literature more widely available and less expensive. If you have questions or comments about accessing these or any other information resources, please give us a call.

"Colonel Strohm's Nurses" Set Up Camp in OHSU Library
Imagine leaving the lush beauty of Portland for the wind-whipped plains of Ft. Riley, Kansas, bound for a rigorous program of military training that aims to prepare you for the horrors of war, horrors which you will witness firsthand in Algiers and in France. Imagine now that it is July, 1942, and that you yourself have volunteered for this mission. Do you have second thoughts about signing up? If you call the commander to bow out, you’re likely to get the same response that Kay Fisher received from Colonel J. Guy Strohm: "Lady, this is the Army! You will report!"
OHSU Historical Collections & Archives is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit, "Colonel Strohm's Nurses," now on display in the lobby of the Main Library. Featuring uniforms, army issue gear, souvenirs, and a wealth of photographs, the exhibit showcases the experience of the women and men of the 46th General Hospital, an all-volunteer medical unit from the University of Oregon Medical School which served in World War II.
This public exhibit will remain on display through the end of December. For more information, contact Karen Peterson (peterska@ohsu.edu) or Sara Piasecki (piasecki@ohsu.edu), or visit the History of Medicine website at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/hom/.

"Summit" Launched: 22 Million Books available to 180,000 Students and Faculty
Orbis Cascade Alliance announces the launch of Summit, a new Web resource offering information on more than 22 million books and other materials owned by university and college libraries in Oregon and Washington. Summit is freely available at http://summit.orbiscascade.org and linked from the Databases page and other places on the OHSU Library Web siteIn addition, direct borrowing is available to students and faculty at member institutions. Orbis Cascade Alliance currently includes every public four-year university and college in Oregon and Washington, 11 private colleges and two community colleges. Additional colleges and community colleges are planned for inclusion in 2004. Summit allows users to order books from libraries all over the Northwest.
"Even students and faculty at a large institution gain from the creation of Summit," stated Betsy Wilson, library director at the University of Washington. "Although UW has a library collection of over 6 million volumes, no one institution can collect everything of interest to students and faculty. Our patrons find additional copies of high-demand titles in Summit as well as unique items at other libraries, big and small."

Logging in to Library computers
The OHSU Windows 2000 PC workstations in the Library require that OHSU faculty, staff, and students have their Novell log in, password, and context in order to use the computers. This information can be obtained by contacting the OHSU Help Desk at (503)494-2222 or by asking your department's Network Contact for help with interfacing with the Help Desk. The Library staff can assist individuals with looking up their context and getting logged on to the workstations if they know their log in and password. The OHSU Macintosh workstations still require that an individual present their OHSU ID card at either the Reference or Circulation Desk in order to get a sticker for their badge with this information.
If individuals are having problems logging in the first source of contact should be the Reference or Circulation Desk. The personnel at these desks will be able to provide assistance or direct them to someone who can help them.

Update from the National Library of Medicine
The National Library of Medicine recently announced the availability of a new, free application for handheld wireless devices and searching enhancements to PubMed.The new Web application for handheld devices includes three search possibilities: a PubMed search interface, an interface to browse abstracts from 128 core clinical journals, or a search interface for clinical trials. For more detailed information see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/ja03/ja03_pda.html.
PubMed users can now limit searches to full text. The subset, free full text [sb], retrieves citations that have a link to full text when no payment or subscription is required. For example, a search on fibromyalgia AND free full text [sb] will retrieve a list of all the full text articles on fibromyalgia that are available to everyone. Another new subset, full text [sb], retrieves citations when there is a link to full text, free or not. Remember to use the PubMed links on the Library Web site in order to take full advantage of linking capability to full text. Go to http://www.ohsu.edu/library/pubmed.shtml to access the OHSU links.
For addition information, contact Dolores Judkins at judkinsd@ohsu.edu or 503 494-3478.

Lewis and Clark Exhibit
The OHSU Library commemorates the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by hosting an exhibit entitled "Medicine and Surgery during the Lewis and Clark Expedition". The exhibit was created by members of the OHSU History of Medicine Society and will be on display in the Main Library through September 2003.In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson sent the expedition to find and map a transcontinental water route to the Pacific Ocean. Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the 33-member party, known as the Corps of Discovery. The expedition set out on May 14, up the Missouri River in a 55-foot covered keelboat and two small craft. On Nov. 7, 1805, after a journey of more than 18 months, the Pacific Ocean came into view. Near the mouth of the Columbia, members of the expedition built a stockade, later named Fort Clatsop, where they spent the winter. On March 23, 1806, the entire party started back, reaching St. Louis on Sept. 23, 1806. Travel westward by American settlers and traders began soon after on the route blazed by these brave men and one woman.
In the absence of a doctor, it fell to Lewis and Clark to attend to the injuries and illnesses of their party and only one man was lost during the expedition. Their medical practices were a potpourri of Army medicine, Indian medicine and frontier home remedies. The medicines that Lewis purchased to carry with them fell into four general groups: purgatives (cathartics), emetics, antipyretics and analgesics. The total expense for the medicines and related equipment was $90.60.

Take the OHSU Library Survey
Please tell us what you think! The OHSU Library is conducting a survey of the OHSU community to learn how you use our services and how well we meet your needs. In these challenging economic times, we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about the services we offer. With your input via this survey, we can make more informed decisions that are consistent with the needs of the campus community. The survey is available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=68166212703. It contains 21 questions and should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. If you include your name and e-mail address, you will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate for a local bookstore. Thanks very much!May 1, 2003

OHSU Library joins BioMed Central
OHSU has recently become an institutional member of BioMed Central (BMC). OHSU faculty, students and staff already download the free, online, original research articles indexed and linked in PubMed. With this membership, OHSU authors will be able to publish in over 80+ journals without paying the $500 per article publication charge. A list of these journals is available at http://www.biomedcentral.com/info/libraries/oajournals.The advantages of publishing in BioMed Central journals over traditional journals include:
- Free online worldwide access to your work; high visibility
- Authors retain copyright and are free to put their work on the Web.
- Rapid online system of submission, peer reviewing and publication.
- View your article's access statistics.
- Articles are immediately indexed in PubMed and archived in PubMed Central.
Authors who choose to publish their research in BioMed Central journals are supporting an open-access model whose aim is to change the way scientific research is published and disseminated. Papers published by OHSU authors are listed at http://www.biomedcentral.com/inst/36759.
According to William Hersh, Professor and Head, Division of Medical Informatics & Outcomes Research, "There is a growing concern among scientists that research results are controlled by an increasingly small number of publishers who have great control over the marketplace. I believe that BMC represents the future of scientific publishing." ("The Way of the Future?" Nature 413: 680 Oct 18, 2001.)
For information on submitting a manuscript, see http://www.biomedcentral.com/manuscript/. For more information about OHSU's membership in BMC, please contact Diane Carroll at carroldi@ohsu.edu.

May 2002 Library Survey Results
The purpose of the May 2002 Library survey was to evaluate current resources and services and to assess future information needs of the OHSU community. About 8% of current faculty, students and staff responded (1,098/13,930).Most respondents were somewhat or very satisfied with overall library services, online journals, electronic books and databases; moderately satisfied with the print collection; and the least satisfied with off-campus access. Lack of study areas and a noisy environment were liked least, and the electronic collections and helpful staff were liked most.
The top six priorities identified for the OHSU library over the next two years are:
- Provide increased access to electronic journals
- Provide free interlibrary loans to OHSU faculty, students and staff
- Provide increased access to electronic books
- Maintain quality of OHSU print book and journal collection
- Purchase permanent electronic back files of core electronic journals
- Provide seamless access to OHSU library resources among Marquam Hill and West campus libraries.
Detailed results and information on actions taken by library staff in response to the May 2002 survey can be found at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/surveys/.

Full-Text, Internet-Based Library Resources for Oregon Nurses
Beginning February 2003, OHSU Library will offer all nurses licensed in Oregon (RNs, LPNs, CRNAs, CNSs, NPs) free access to Ovid Technologies’ Lippincott/Springhouse Nursing Collection, an Internet-based library of 12 nursing texts. Funding comes through a Digital Libraries Grant from the National Library of Medicine. The purpose of the 18-month grant is to determine the usefulness of such a resource to nurses in various types of settings and with differing specialties, and to test the feasibility of statewide coverage through a blanket agreement with the resource provider. The library has already established a similar arrangement for Oregon physicians, funded through their license fees, allowing them access to STAT!Ref, another Internet-based, full-text library.
Registration is easy. Go to www.ohsu.edu/library/nurses/ and click on “Register for the Online Library” or go directly to www.ohsu.edu/library/nurses/regform.shtml. Please be sure your email address is correct, as that is how your password and other information will be sent to you.

Watch for a schedule of these sessions on the library's webpage and listed around campus. Library staff will also be happy to go to your office for an overview.New features that will be coming, but may not be there at the same time the interface changes, are a single citation matcher and a similar articles link. These features are familiar to PubMed users, and will now be available in Ovid as well.
