OHSU Library Collection Decisions for 2003

The OHSU Library Collection Development Committee has completed the 2003 journal renewals, additions and cancellations. Funds to add titles were created from canceling low use titles or purchasing titles online only. Detailed information on how journals were selected and title lists for the categories summarized below is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/depts/colldevcomm/

  • 31 titles were added in print and/or online
  • 217 print subscription were canceled; current subscription and back files are available online
  • 14 print duplicate titles were canceled; current subscription and back files are available online
  • 52 print titles were canceled
  • 181 electronic titles from Academic/IDEAL lost with Elsevier merger; back files are available online
  • About 900 titles from the ScienceDirect trial will be removed at the end of December 2002. To view these titles, click on "Trial journals" on the electronic journals page on the OHSU Library Website http://www9.ohsu.edu/library/ejournalsmain/cfejstart.cfm.

Increases in electronic journals costs, publisher mergers, the closing of the IDEAL platform, licensing issues and new electronic journal purchasing models have had a dramatic effect on the OHSU Library as it has on all medical libraries. For more information or discussion about these decisions, please contact Diane Carroll, carroldi@ohsu.edu or 503 494-6659.

Improved EJournal Search Capabilities

The electronic journal Web page has been updated to allow for more precision searching. One word journal titles such as "Science", "Biochemistry" or "Immunology" will be located faster with the new "Journal Title Begins With" search. Typing one word in the second search option "Keyword" would locate journals with that word anywhere in the journal title or topic fields.

For example:
"Journals Title Begins With" search for "Science"- results in 15 journal titles retrievals
"Keyword" search for "Science" - results in 553 retrievals

If you have any questions about this new interface, please contact Laura Zeigen at library@ohsu.edu.

Library Exhibit on Esther Pohl Lovejoy, Second Woman Graduate of OHSU in 1894

The OHSU Library currently has an exhibit on Esther Pohl Lovejoy in the display case on the main floor of the Library near the Information Desk.

Esther Pohl Lovejoy was the second woman graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School in 1894 and ultimately the first woman graduate to practice medicine. She practiced medicine in Portland until the gold rush in Alaska beckoned. Along with panning for gold, Esther opened a makeshift hospital to treat scores of gold miners after an epidemic of meningitis broke out. Esther returned to Portland and entered public life as a pioneer member of the Portland Board of Health in 1905 and was health officer and chairman of the Board from 1907 to 1909, the first woman in the U.S. to hold such a position.

Esther was a member of the Medical Womens National Association (MWNA), founded in 1915, and she was present at the first meeting in New York of the MWNA War Service Committee renamed American Womens Hospitals. She traveled to France in August 1917 and in Paris joined the staff of the American Red Cross. In 1919, she founded the Medical Womens International Association and was chosen to be the chairman of the executive board for the American Womens Hospitals (AWH). She died in 1967.

The OHSU Library exhibit on Esther Pohl Lovejoy will continue through September.

Changes to OHSU Old Library Access

Effective Monday, September 30, 2002, the Old Library book stacks, located in the Auditorium Building on the Marquam Hill Campus, will no longer be open to OHSU personnel or to the public. The area is being closed to insure that the facility and the collection are kept secure. When this change takes effect, library users may obtain materials from the Old Library in the following ways:

  • Request items for delivery to a selected OHSU Library location for pick up

  • Request copies of articles using the library's fee-based photocopy service (see http://www.ohsu.edu/library/photo.shtml)
  • Make an appointment for browsing or research

Materials can be requested online and will be retrieved from the Old Library twice daily, Monday - Friday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Items requested before 8 a.m. or 2 p.m. will generally be available for pickup at the Main Library by 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. Library Adds Study Space in Response to 2002 Library Survey

The OHSU Library has made some changes in the physical layout of the Library to help create more study space. About 21% of the 2002 Library survey respondents (239 of 1140) indicated that they visited the library monthly or more frequently to "use the it as a place to study". This was second only to visiting the library to look for a journal article (40%). In addition, 16% of the survey respondents (181of 1140) indicated that "providing additional study space" should be one of library's top 5 priorities.

As part of an effort to respond to these needs for increased study space, the Library has made the following changes:

  • The majority of the computers on the 4th floor have been moved to the 3rd floor, making the 4th floor available to be more of a study area.

  • The space on the east end of the 4th floor has been reconfigured to make more study cubicles and to give a wider aisle to the current periodicals.

  • Newspapers and periodicals have been moved from the east end of the 4th floor to the west end (formerly the Design Lab).

  • Power strips are in most of these new study spaces on the 4th floor, providing a place for people to plug in their laptops.

  • Additional cubicles are being added on the 4th floor for study areas and are being configured in a way to see if we can help lower the noise level.

  • In addition, the Library is planning on purchasing more tables so there will be more space for people to sit in groups.

If you have questions or comments about these changes, please contact the Library at library@ohsu.edu.

Users may browse by topic, search by keyword, or search for a specific book by title, author, publisher, or ISBN. Please note that terms such as networking, which have different meanings in the IT and business communities, will produce results from both areas.

The free trial is scheduled to last through April 19. We would like your input as to whether this resource would be of value to you, to see if we should consider for possible future purchase. We are especially interested in how this product compares with Safari Tech Books Online ( http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/mainin.asp?login=&pubui-ogi), another online collection of IT books available via free trial through mid-April. Please try it out and send your comments to the Library's Collection Development Committee, cdc@ohsu.edu, or call Janet Crum, (503) 494-0691.

    New Ovid Databases

With the move to Online Ovid, the Library was able to add two databases that were unavailable to us on the old system.  These are Clinical Evidence and  MedWeaver.

Clinical Evidence provides a "concise account of the current state of knowledge, ignorance, and uncertainty" on the prevention and treatment of a variety of clinical conditions based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature.  For each condition, the literature is searched using the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and, occasionally, other electronic databases, looking for good systematic reviews and primary studies.  Included in the over 140 subjects are migraine, peripheral artery disease, vulvodynia, and tinnitus.

MedWeaver is a clinical decision support tool designed for use by clinicians and other healthcare professionals at the point of care.  Its basis is DxPlain, with an interface provided by Ovid that enables linking to full-text articles and abstracts within the MEDLINE database.  It has an interface that enables clinicians to find clinically relevant answers to their diagnostic questions.

For more information on these or other databases, contact a Reference Librarian at x4-3462 or email them at refer@ohsu.edu

    New Journal Subscriptions for 2002

The OHSU Library added over 100 print and electronic journals to the collection for 2002.  In addition, over 100 currently owned print journals were duplicated in electronic format for easy access on and off-campus.  About 20 journals were added in print format only because e-access was not available.  Journals were selected based on recommendations from the OHSU community, the number of times citation by OHSU scientists, the ISI impact, the number of interlibrary loans requested and other variables.  Journals that were canceled (29 titles) had low use.

During 2002, over 1000 scientific publications from Elsevier will be available on the ScienceDirect platform at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science.  At the end of December 2002, access will be denied for all but 170 of the 1200 titles, so please take advantage of this collection this year.  All electronic journals and the ScienceDirect titles are listed at   http://www9.ohsu.edu/library/ejournalsmain/cfejstart.cfm

A list of journals to be added to the collection in 2002 is at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/depts/colldevcomm/2002addcancel.shtml.  New titles will be added to the catalog as issues are received.  Gaining access to electronic sources involved signing a licensing agreement so availability can be delayed up to 6 months.  For more information on the criteria for journal selection and selection priorities please contact Diane Carroll at carroldi@ohsu.edu

Changes in EBSCOhost full text database

Over 4100 titles from the full text database provider EBSCOhost have been updated or added to the Library e-journal page at http://www9.ohsu.edu/library/ejournalsmain/cfejstart.cfm. You can identify titles in this collection by the entry on the ejournal page:

    Scientific American
    Jan 1975- Via EBSCOhost.

    1. All EBSCOhost titles now have a direct link to the journal "top page" with information about the journal and a chronological listing of issues. No longer will you be presented with a cumbersome list of individual articles to wade through.

    2. The large increase in the number of titles is a result of the addition of a whole new database, EBSCO Business Source Premier, purchased by OGI Science & Engineering Library. The 1930 full-text titles in this database cover business and finance, but also administration and management, technology (including biotech), statistics, psychology and other topics.

    3. EBSCOhost is purchased through a consortial contract managed by the Oregon State Library, who supports development of public and academic libraries. Titles included in this collection range from scholarly to popular. Some of the titles most frequently used over the last two years include BMJ, Pediatrics, Women's Health Weekly, American Family Physician, CMAJ, Hastings Center Reports, Scientific American, Southern Medical Journal, Time, Christian Science Monitor, Science News, US News and World Report, Popular Photography and Consumer Reports.

    4. Many titles in this collection have an embargo on the most recent 6 months to year of the journal. This collection brings in backfiles and adds breadth to the collection, but cannot replace a print edition or a current electronic subscription to journal titles core to OHSU's mission.

    Francone Collection on Exhibit

Medical illustrations by Clarice Ashworth Francone will be placed on display for the first time beginning in early February in the Library. The Francone Collection, processed by the Library's Special Collections staff, was donated to the Library by the Francone Estate.

Clarice Ashworth Francone was a medical illustrator at the University of Oregon Medical School from 1929 until her retirement in 1969. In 1936, after only 7 years at UOMS, she was appointed Head of the Medical Illustration Department. For many years she was the only medical illustrator in Oregon.

Ms. Francone was born in Rochester, Minnesota in 1901. After graduating from high school, Ms. Francone worked at the Mayo Clinic Art Department, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and spent her second year of medical illustration study at Johns Hopkins University, training under Max Broedel, considered the father of medical illustration. Much of Francones stunning work consists of halftones done with carbon crayon on Ross board, with ink and white highlights added to sharpen images.

Francone illustrated a number of textbooks. The best known is the anatomy and physiology textbook, Structure and Function of Man, which she co-authored with OHSUs Stanley Jacob, M.D. Before retiring from the Medical School in 1969, Francone was asked to donate samples of her work to the Archives of Medical Visual Resources to the Countway Library, Harvard University.

    Ms. Francone died in 1981.

The exhibit was prepared by Jerry Fulkerson, OHSU Library staff member and graphic designer.

    Changes to Ovid Access

The main URL for accessing Ovid has changed from http://www.ohsu.edu/ovidweb/ovidweb.cgi to http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovid. The old URL now provides access only to the old Ovid system, which will be disabled February 1. Links from the Library Web site have been changed accordingly, but please update your bookmarks.

The design of the pages also has changed. OHSU and non-OHSU users now follow different links from the main page, to reduce confusion about which options should be used by each group of users.

OHSU-affiliated users who wish to access Ovid from off-campus will need a library off-campus account. With the library off-campus account, these users will be able to access non-Ovid journals linked to Ovid citations, whereas they were unable to do so with the previous OHSU network ID/password method which is now no longer used.

There is now a separate link for rural hospital accounts on the page for non-OHSU users.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns regarding these changes, please contact the Library at library@ohsu.edu.

    Improved Electronic Journals Access

Electronic journals consistently have been one of the most used resources on the OHSU Library Web site since their introduction in 1998. The current ejournal pages include links to about 1700 titles, which are difficult to scroll through and labor intensive to maintain. With the introduction of Web-enabled databases at OHSU, the library staff can now provide access to more electronic journals--over 6500--in a database that you can search by keyword or browse by title or topic. Plus, this new database includes journals from the OGI Science & Engineering Library. Each entry includes links that provide access from Marquam Hill, West Campus or off-campus based on availability.

To access this new resource, point your browser to http://www9.ohsu.edu/library/ejournalsmain/cfejstart.cfm. The existing Web addresses under the old http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals/ area will be redirected to this new location, so if you go to the old address you will get to the new database-driven electronic journal page.

This resource is the result of close collaboration with various database and server administrators in ITG, especially database administrator Jon Waldow. Many thanks to Jon, Web Services, and all in ITG who were involved in helping make this happen!

Please bear with us as development of this important resource continues. If you have questions, concerns, or comments regarding the transformation of the e-journals resource, please contact the OHSU Library Web Managers at library@ohsu.edu.

    MedWeaver Replaces DxPlain

As of January 4th, MedWeaver is replacing DxPlain. MedWeaver, part of the Ovid system, is based on DxPlain. It is a decision support tool that combines differential diagnosis, assisted literature searching, and Web exploration. Using MedWeaver, clinicians find answers through two interactive modes: Differential Diagnosis and Disease Lookup. The Differential Diagnosis mode allows entry of a patient casecomplete with patient demographics, signs, symptoms, and laboratory test results. In the Disease Lookup mode, healthcare professionals have direct access to disease and condition profiles, plus receive assistance in performing Ovid literature searches and searching the Web.

Find MedWeaver in the list of Ovid databases at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovid/ .
