Ovid Access Changes
Access to the Ovid databases is changing following the successful transition to Ovid Online in November, 2001. Changes are as follows:On campus:
- No login/password necessary from OHSU/OGI computers
- Password needed only if you save searches or use the SDI/AutoAlert feature. To get this password, fill out the form at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ovidsignup.shtml
Off campus:
- OHSU/OGI can use their OHSU network ID and password. For OGI staff who do not have this, they can sign up for one at http://www/computeraccess/forms.html
- Non-OHSU licensed Oregon health practitioners must submit the form available at: http://www.ohsu.edu/orhp to request their ID/password
- OHSU faculty/staff/students can also access Ovid from the off-campus access page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/offcampus/ with your off campus account.
Access to the old Ovid system will remain available until February 1. On February 1, access will be removed. Telnet access to Ovid will also end at that time; only the web version will continue to be supported.
If you have questions and concerns regarding these changes to Ovid, please contact Janet Crum at crumj@ohsu.edu, 4-0691 or Dolores Judkins at judkinsd@ohsu.edu, 4-3478 or email refer@ohsu.edu.

New Ovid Online
The Ovid system has moved from locally loaded databases to going direct to Ovid. This means that the Ovid databases will be more current, people using Ovid on an OHSU computer will no longer need an ID and password, and there will be many more full-text journals, increasing from the current 40 to go to 120 full-text journals. There will also be three new databases: PREMEDLINE, which are very current citations that are not yet indexed with Medical Subject Headings; Clinical Evidence, which summarizes the latest reserach evidence on the effectiveness of common treatments and prevention strategies for conditions treated by almost all the major medical specialties; and, MedWeaver, a decision support tool that combines differential diagnosis, assisted literature searching, and Web exploration. MedWeaver takes the place of DxPlain.

PDA Hot Synch
The Library is considering offering the ability to hot synch your PDA through an infrared device directly to a zip disk. This means that you could take the zip disk and none of your personal information would be left behind. Tests with the Palm IIIx have been successful. The major drawbacks are that infrared device and zip drive combination is slower than hot synching to a cradle and it requires a high technical level of expertise. This process would be beneficial to those who have a PDA, but do not have a computer of their own. For those who may want to synch your PDA on-campus as well as at your office or home, the Library staff is investigating the possibility of synching from more than one location. Volunteers interested in helping the Library investigating this functionality should contact Doug Carman at carmand@ohsu.edu or 503-494-3469, BICC Room 333.

Signing Up and Logging On to MDConsult
The OHSU Library has recently launched a new Web resource to help OHSU faculty, students and staff to sign up or log onto MD Consult. The page, located at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/mdcondirect.shtml , has two major sections: one for users who do not yet have an MD Consult account and one for users who already have an MD Consult account and want to log on. There is a slightly different procedure to follow depending on whether you are registering or logging on from on-campus or off-campus. Everyone who has access to an OHSU workstation should sign up while at an OHSU computer. Off-campus sign-up is only for those people who never have access to an OHSU computer, such as distance education students. The Library staff hopes this resource helps alleviate any confusion regarding these different procedures. For questions or comments regarding this resource or MD Consult, please contact Dolores Judkins, judkinsd@ohsu.edu, Head of Research and Reference Services.

Results of 2001 Library Journal Survey
The School of Medicine had the highest participation in the 2001 Library Journal Survey with 60% of 160 surveys submitted. Faculty members had the highest response rate at 56%, followed by staff and students with 18% and 12%, respectively. Detailed results of the 2001 Library Journal Web Survey posted during August can be found at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/surveys/.The top-ranked journals of importance to OHSU community were Science, Nature, Cell, Journal of Neuroscience, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Nature Neuroscience. The print formats of 295 of the 445 journal titles (66%) listed are available at an OHSU Library on the Marquam Hill or West Campus. The electronic format is available for 228 of the 445 titles (51%). The OHSU Library Collection Development Committee will review all recommended titles not held by the Library in early October.
Over 75% of the respondents found their success rate had improved in finding journals in electronic format. Comments were very supportive of continuing the growth of the electronic journal collection. Of the Wiley Current Protocol series, Current Protocols in Neuroscience and Current Protocols in Molecular Biology had the highest support for electronic access.
The Library staff learned of areas of strength in the collection and areas that need development. We would like to thank all that contributed to the survey. For additional information or questions, please contact Diane Carroll at carroldi@ohsu.edu.

The New Library Catalog Is Here
By the time you read this article, the new library catalog should be live and fully operational! The library staff, with help from the ITG staff, has worked very hard all spring and summer to implement this exciting new research tool. Anyone can visit t he new catalog by pointing a Web browser to http://catalogs.ohsu.edu.What's New About the Catalog? Our new catalog, powered by the Millennium software from Innovative Interfaces, Inc., features several improvements over our old system--more library holdings, an improved Web interface, and, coming soon, links to the Orbis u nion catalog and reciprocal borrowing service. In addition to OHSU library holdings, the new catalog will include the holdings of the OGI Science & Engineering Library and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine Library. Holdings of the Isabel McD onald Library at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center will be added in the spring of 2002. Catalog users will be able to search any one library individually or all of them simultaneously, using a redesigned Web interface that performs much faster than the library's previous Web-based catalog. Beginning in early 2002, library users will be able to search for and borrow materials in the Orbis union catalog, which includes over 20 public and private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington .
Who Provided the Funding? A $312,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), FFY2001, administered by the Oregon State Library, provided the financial support needed to move the book, j ournal and multimedia holdings to this new system.
Will all the Records Be Transferred to the New Catalog? When the new catalog first goes live, information on serial holdings especially the most recent issues received may be incomplete for a few weeks. Please be assured that we will add this important i nformation as quickly as possible. We will use this column and the library alert service email list to keep users posted on new developments and features of the catalog. We also welcome feedback; please send comments, compliments, gripes and suggestions to libweb@ohsu.edu.

Off-Campus E-Journal Access Sporadic
The Library has been experiencing problems in providing off-campus access to electronic journals and other resources. The proxy server service used to allow access to these resources is currently experiencing sporadic system outages due to computer viruses. We expect this problem will be resolved within the week. If you continue to experiencing problems accessing an electronic journal or database from off-campus, please e-mail libweb@ohsu.edu or complete the customer support form at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/customersupport.shtml .August 1, 2001
OHSU Library Journal Survey 2001
The Library Journal Survey 2001 will be available on the Library Web site Aug. 1 - 31. The survey asks for new areas of research and for new journal titles for the library journal collection. The survey is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/surveys/.Access to scientific journals in print and electronic format is critical to the mission of OHSU. In the last 18 months, OHSU authors have published more than 2,200 articles and cited more than 61,000 references in these papers. The survey Web site also includes frequently asked questions and answers about the library's journal collection and the process of identifying and adding new journals to the collection.
Please participate in this survey to help shape the future of the library journal collection. For more information, please contact Diane Carroll at carroldi@ohsu.edu.

E-Journal Delivery Not Perfect
There has been an explosion in the number of electronic journals available to the scientific community. However, the standardization that comes with maturity in any new industry has not yet arrived. This makes the OHSU Library's efforts to create seamless electronic journal access challenging to achieve. What we know:
1. Sometimes linking to an electronic journal can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience.
2. The electronic journal pages in the Library Web site are too long and can be difficult to navigate. We are developing a dynamic Web page solution that will replace the static pages and help reduce this problem.
3. You want to locate a title in the online catalog and be able to link to the electronic journal. The new Innovative Millennium catalog, due for launch this fall, will allow you to locate the print holdings and link to the electronic holdings. What we don't know:
1. When publishers changed their passwords, access codes or other information needed for you to log in.
2. That there is a subscription problem that results in access being cut off.
3. If you need more years of a journal than the library has purchased. No matter now much we test the Web site, it often takes a report from you to make us aware that there is a problem. We ask for your continued input and patience as we work to improve electronic journal access.

Nature Journals Back Online
Electronic access to Nature Publishing Group titles is now available from the electronic journals page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals. Access to Nature Reviews Genetics and Nature Reviews Neuroscience will be added as soon as vendor access is established. The licensing for these titles is controversial in the academic library community primarily because of a 3-month embargo on some parts of the journal. Several major research university libraries are boycotting licensing agreements with this publisher. Please respond to the OHSU Library survey at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/surveys/nature022601.shtml
For more information, contact Cindy Cunningham, cunningc@ohsu.edu.

Web of Science is here!
The Web of Science is available today!! It can be accessed through the Library's Database page at: http://www.ohsu.edu/library/data2.shtml#w. Web of Science is the electronic version of Science Citation Abstracts and Social Science Citation Abstracts. The OHSU Library has access to the 1996-2001 files. Web of Science currently is not available from off-campus, but the Library is working on obtaining this access within the next few weeks.March 1, 2001
Nature Online Access Temporarily Suspended
Online access to the Nature titles has been temporarily suspended. The Library is working with the publisher to finalize licensing agreements and we expect to have electronic access restored in about 2-4 weeks. The Library will continue to receive print copies of the Nature journals. Notices of the break in service and a link to a survey are attached to each of the Nature titles on the electronic journals page (see http://www.ohsu.edu/library/surveys/nature022601.shtml). This link also provides background information on the licensing issues. The Nature Publishing Group site licensing arrangements have been very controversial in the academic/research library community for the last several months and major research institutions have refused the conditions. We encourage users of the Nature titles to respond to the survey. If you have additional questions, please contact the OHSU Library Collection Development Committee, cdc@ohsu.edu.February 26, 2001

Problems with e-journals
We have discovered that a number of our electronic journals are not functioning properly since the beginning of the new year. This may occur for a couple of reasons. In some cases, publishers have not processed payments from our subscription agent correctly. In other cases, there may be changes in licensing agreements that need to be processed. We are working with our subscription agent to resolve these problems and hope to have all our electronic journals functioning by the end of January. In the meantime, if you cannot access a title, please email libweb@ohsu.edu and let us know. Thank you in advance for your patience!January 4, 2001
