Shelving Replacement Project II: December 11 - January 19

On Monday, December 11, the Library will begin phase two of a shelving replacement project on the 2nd floor of the Main Library. This will involve moving library materials to temporary storage areas in the Library where direct access for users will be provided. The project is expected to take 4-6 weeks. There will be noise associated with the project which should be limited to periods when disruption to training on the first floor is minimized. We apologize for the inconvenience and will make every effort to complete the project as expeditiously as possible. Please contact Cindy Cunningham, cunningc@ohsu.edu, with questions or concerns.

*IDEAL* is here - newest addition to library e-journals

What do the journals Biochemical & Biophysical Research Communications, Developmental Biology, Experimental Eye Research, Journal of Molecular Biology, and Virology have in common? OHSU authors have cited them over 200 times in the last 5 years and they are now available as ejournals through the OHSU Library.

Academic Press IDEAL is now linked from the Library's Full Text Electronic Journals page at http://www.idealibrary.com. This collection provides full text electronic access to nearly 250 Academic Press, W.B. Saunders and Churchill Livingstone journals.

Other IDEAL features include a current awareness service, IDEAL Alert that sends subscribers table of contents for new issues from their selected journals. IDEAL Link In allows users to go directly to a specific article using citation information.

IDEAL library is included in the alphabetical list of e-journals on the OHSU Library Web site (http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals) under "Academic Press IDEAL" or "IDEAL". In addition, high use biomedical titles in the IDEAL library have been added to the alphabetical list of e-journals. To see a complete list of available titles, use the Browse function after selecting IDEAL.

OHSU faculty, staff and students can register for off campus access to electronic resources at https://www.ohsu.edu/library/offcampusapp.shtml. For additional information about full text electronic journals, contact Cindy Cunningham, cunningc@ohsu.edu.

Electronic Document Delivery is here

What is Electronic Document Delivery? Electronic Document Delivery, or EDD, allows for the delivery of documents (copies of journal articles or book chapters) electronically in PDF format-much like an electronic greeting card. What does this mean for me? Requests you submit to the OHSU library for document delivery will be sent to you electronically in PDF format if the Library has your e-mail address. An individual account is set up for you on the Library's server. When your document is available for you to download, you will receive an e-mail with a login and pin number. Whenever a new document is added to your account, you will receive a new message by e-mail. More detailed information on the new Electronic Document Delivery services is available at: http://www.ohsu.edu/library/edd.shtml" .

Library Web Site Receives Year 2000 Makeover

The OHSU Library Web site is now sporting a new top page and major changes to some of the top resources. The Library Web Manager, aided this summer by two interns from the University of Oregon, has worked over the course of several months to gather feedback from OHSU faculty, staff, and students and bring together these new designs and functionalities.

The changed pages, remodeled after listening to users' needs in interface and design, are as follows:

New top Library page - Same Web address; New Look
http://www.ohsu.edu/library/

The new top Library page now has clickable rollover maps so users can more easily preview the kinds of information and sub-links they will get if they click on a particular main link. These have replaced, and improved on, the functionality of the old pull-down menus. All links from the previous page are still present on the new page and new links, including a Virtual Library Tour (see below) have been added. The page, now utilizing a design element called style sheets, should load significantly faster in all browsers.

Virtual Library Tour - Great New Resource for Newcomers
http://www.ohsu.edu/library/virtual/

New to the OHSU campus and want to know your way around? Been here for years and still confused about how to find things in the Library? Check out this new resource, created by one of the Library's summer interns, Andrea Saven of the University of Oregon. The Tour will give an overview of the major sections of the Library, both in regards to services and collections. Diagrams and photos of where these resources are to be found are included throughout.

New ejournals page: New Web address; New Everything!
http://www.ohsu.edu/library/ejournals/

Up until now, the e-journals available on-campus and off-campus have resided on two separate lists. The Library Web Manager and Systems Librarian have consolidated these listings into one mega-list of electronic journals. This mega-listing separates out the journals in alphabetical order and, with every title, makes clear where a user would need to go for accessing the resource from on-campus or from off-campus, if available. This consolidation of e-journals listings will hopefully make it easier for our patrons to quickly know if a particular journal is available to them online and, if so, how.

New databases page - Same Web address; New Look
http://www.ohsu.edu/library/data2.shtml

After extensive research on ways to improve the way we list our databases, the Library's Reference Department spearheaded an effort to go to an alphabetical listing. It is hoped this will make it easier for users to find their database. This main databases page contains short annotations, information on accessibility (whether free to all, only available on the OHSU campus, or only available with password), and a link to info about that database which takes the user to a much longer description.

New search page - Same Web address; New Functionality
http://www.ohsu.edu/library/search.shtml

OHSU Library patrons now can search the entire Library site for topics of interest with a highly workable and Library focused search engine, Webinator, implemented by another Library summer intern, Paul Jaeger, also of the University of Oregon. Search results include relevance rankings and clickable link to the resource; if one was looking up the journal Nature, for instance, it would bring up the electronic journals page with the link to this ejournal. Users will greatly benefit from this improvement on finding what they want on the site.

The Library is excited to present these new resources to the OHSU community and beyond and hopes it better serves the needs of each person accessing Library resources.

If you have comments about these new resources or ideas about how to make them better, please let the Library Web Manager know by e-mailing libweb@ohsu.edu.

Search engine improvements

The search engine for the Library, located at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/search.shtml has recently undergone some improvements that will make searching the Library Web site easier.

Previously, the search engine used for the Library was WebGlimpse, which is the same one used for the entire OHSU campus and which only allowed users to search the entire OHSU site. The new search engine, Webinator, allows patrons to search files on the just Library Web site. It returns the search in order of relevancy rankings and includes links to other pertinent information about that search return. This improved functionality means users will be able to find the information they seek on the Library site more quickly and efficiently. Much of the work on this new and improved search engine was done by one of the Library's summer interns, Paul Jaeger, from the University of Oregon. Other major improvements to the Library Web site are coming soon.

If you have questions or comments about the search engine, please contact the OHSU Library Web Managers at libweb@ohsu.edu.

Results from Library journal survey

The below is a brief summary of the online survey the OHSU Library conducted from June 1-30, 2000 to obtain information from patrons across campus on the relevance of the Library3s journal collection. A more in-depth report is available.

Of the 300 surveys submitted, 55% were from faculty, 24% were from staff and 15% were from students, comprising 2.8% of the total OHSU faculty, staff, and student population and representing 90 departments.

The top 10 journals of most use to OHSU community and number of responses were:

1. Nature (44)
2. Cell (42)
3. Journal of Neuroscience (40)
4. Science (27)
5. Journal of Biol. Chemistry (23)
6. New England Journal of Medicine (23)
7.Nature Genetics (20)
8. Neuron (20)
9. JAMA (17)
10. Proceed Nat. Acad. of Science (15)

The OHSU Library currently subscribes to all of the top 10 journals in both print and electronic format.

A current subscription is available on-campus for 415 of 529 titles (78%) listed as "journals most important to your work at OHSU."

An electronic version is available on and off-campus for 139 of the 529 titles (33%).Most of these journals require a print copy to be purchased before electronic version can be made available.

The scores of 32 low-use journals ranged from 1 to 2 (1= do not use to 5 = use often). Asking the whole community about the usefulness of specific journals that are relevant to only a few does not provide enough useful information to make decisions about keeping or canceling a journal.

The listing of the top 5 journals most important to your work at OHSU is a beneficial exercise in evaluating the journal collection. However, the Library staff recognizes that a more comprehensive evaluation of the collection based on departmental involvement and advisory groups are critical to best use of the Library3s limited resources. A review of the journals in which the OHSU faculty have published and been cited is also being used to evaluate the journal collection (Institute for Scientific Information data).

The most effective ways for the Library to keep users informed of changes in Library service are e-mail and use of the Library Web site. The least effective were presentations at departmental meetings and a Library liaison program.

Although the campus community did not rate the Library liaison program highly, experience in other libraries has shown the program has proven effective at other universities as a means of working with departments, especially in the areas of collection development and selection of electronic resources.

Members of the OHSU Library staff who participated in developing the survey, analyzing the results, and writing the report include Cindy Cunningham, Diane Carroll, Julie Cook, Dolores Judkins, James Morgan, Judith Norton, Laura Zeigen, and Carrie Willman.

For further details or discussion of results, please contact:

New look for Science Online

A message from the producers of Science Online:

"Dear Science Online User:

As you may have already noticed, Science Online (http://www.scienceonline.org) now has a new look. If you haven't already done so, please check out the new site. We had several goals in reorganizing the site and changing the design:

  • Improve navigation through the site, and make it more 'intuitive' or user-friendly

  • Distinguish between the various AAAS online products and clarify that they all come from the publisher of Science and carry the same high standards for quality and integrity Science readers have received for over a century

  • Enable better highlighting of the hottest new articles each week on the 'front' page of the journal part of the site

In addition to these design changes, we have improved some of our Customer Service features online. Although your calls and emails are always welcome, it is now easier to take care of many basic account management functions online. Simply click on the "subscriptions" button to renew, upgrade, or activate your account. From the subscriptions page, click on "Manage Your Account" to update your contact information or change your password.

We would love to hear from you about your reaction to the new site. We are still making adjustments to these pages, so your feedback is welcome.

If you have any questions or comments about the new site, please feel free to contact AAAS Member Services at (202) 326-6417 or membership@aaas.org. Or, simply click on "Feedback."

Sincerely, AAAS Member Services"

OHSU/VAMC Library Cooperation

The OHSU Library and the Portland VAMC Library are cooperating in new ways to benefit users from both institutions. OHSU and VAMC personnel with appropriate ID can check materials out and use the journal collections at either library. On January 1, 2000, the libraries began routinely faxing all items requested via ILL to speed delivery and all fees are waived. Users of both libraries find it convenient to trek across the Bridge when a journal is at the bindery. In addition to print materials, the electronic resources of both libraries are available for use in the libraries. You can browse the current journal holdings and electronic journals of the OHSU and VAMC libraries. The VAMC Library is located in Building 101 in Room 202. Please contact the VAMC Library for futher information about specific services or resources, x 195-5955 or 220-8262 x 5955.
