Changes to Ovid full-text collections

There have been some important changes to the Library's Ovid full text collections. First, the Ovid nursing collection has been cancelled. We will retain access to the years we paid for, 1995-1999, but we will not receive further updates to this collection. Because these titles will not be kept current, they are not included on the full text electronic journals page. Second, we have purchased Ovid's Nursing Collection II, giving us electronic access to 14 nursing journals. These journals are listed below. In most cases, coverage begins with 1996. These titles have been added to the full text electronic journals page, and they will be in VTLS soon, too. The How-To for Ovid full text will be updated as soon as possible.

Library adds Microsoft 2000

During the week of December 2 - 10, the Library will be installing the Microsoft Office 2000 Suite on all the floor PC computers. Patrons will now have access to the latest versions of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint on the PC. Office98, installed on the floor Macintoshes, is the latest Microsoft Office Suite available for Macs.

Microsoft products are still considered unsupported applications. Therefore, patrons needing assistance with these applications should use the Online Help, which comes with each application, and Microsoft's Office web site. The Library will also be obtaining some books on these applications to make available to patrons in the Reference section.

Patrons need to remember that if they create a document in any of the applications in the Office 2000 suite they need to save them as a Office 97 or a lower version document if they want to access them in any of the earlier versions of Office. Office 2000 can read any of the older versions of Office, but the older versions can't read the newer.

Questions or concerns? Please e-mail the OHSU Library Web Managers at libweb@ohsu.edu.

OHSU Library Celebrates 80th Year

OHSU Library's 80th birthday is this year (1919--1999), making the Library the oldest medical school library in the Pacific Northwest. The Library was originally located in the University of Oregon Medical Department building at N.W. 23rd and Lovejoy, across from Good Samaritan Hospital.

The Library collection grew from an 1893 book donation by two Portland physicians, Drs. Rodney Glisan and R. B. Wilson. It was called the R. B. Wilson library and was located in the Physiology lab. Many of the original books are still in the collection and are signed by Glisan or Wilson.

In summer 1919 the first librarian, Bertha Hallam, moved the Library up to the still-unfinished Medical Science Building, which is now the east wing of Mackenzie Hall. She began to organize the several thousand volumes that had been acquired since 1893.

Today the OHSU Library has over 227,000 volumes, plus an extensive archival collection of historical records and photographs and museum artifacts, and includes the Dental branch library and the CDRC branch library. The main branch is in the Biomedical Information Communication Center building, which opened in September 1991.

New Photographic and Graphic Services Pages

The new Photographic and Graphic Services Web pages showcase the services of three related OHSU departments: Medical Photography, Baird Hall, Room 6 The Digital Zone, Baird Hall, Room 10 The Design Lab, situated on the fourth floor of the BICC Library. The site begins with a "splash page" image map that links to each of the three departments. From there you can access information on each of the departments' services. Since the site is heavily laden with graphics, it was first designed and constructed in Photoshop. The images were then cropped and placed into nested tables. Framesets and anchors were incorporated in order to achieve clean and effective navigation without extensive scrolling. If you would like more information please contact the Design Lab at 494-7111.

Changes to Ovid access on public workstations

Access to Ovid telnet sessions on the public access workstations has changed. MedlinePlus, Internet Grateful Med, and PubMed, which are all sites from the National Library of Medicine, are now listed. These sites are set up for the layperson and offer a very helpful way to obtain information. Access to many of the PORTALS databases has been added as well. The Library has made these changes partly in response to research done by both the computer and Reference staff. This new configuration should be most beneficial to those from the community using the Library's public access workstations. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact the Library computer support team at libweb@ohsu.edu.

New Look, Feel For Library Web Site

The OHSU Library site was upgraded to its new look on September 15. The new site, at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/index.shtml reflects several months of user testing and evaluation to determine how end-users were looking for information and how best to place that information on the site. The results of this evaluation can be viewed at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/staff/julyeval.htm.

The remodeled pages feature greater access to the CDRC and Dental Branch Library pages, pages which are designed for easier skimming and finding of information, and a further breakdown of major categories on the top-level page. These additional categories include a separate page for Journals on which patrons may find links to the ever-popular full-text electronic journals and a separate page for searching the online catalog.

This recent "remodeling" is just one in a series of updates to the OHSU Library site. If you have an idea or suggestion (or even complaint!) about the OHSU Library site, please either e-mail the Library Web Managers at libweb@ohsu.edu or use the online feedback form at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/feedback.shtml. The Library Web Managers look forward to hearing from you.

Changes to Library Web site

This is one of several "heads up" messages which will be posted to warn of some impending changes to the Library Web site. The interface with which you have become familiar will be changing, and changing to what we feel will be for the better, based on months of user input and user testing. The top Library Web pages will be sporting a new look by the end of September. The pages further down in the site will be changed after the top-level pages are successfully brought over into the new style. There will be another notice regarding this change the day prior to it happening. In the meantime if you have questions or concerns about how these changes will affect your usability of the Library site, please contact us at libweb@ohsu.edu.

Win 10 free document delivery articles, free pizza or coffee!

The Library has a beta-version of the most recent Library Web page upgrade on the development server for testing. We have an online "scavenger hunt" of questions and evaluation we are asking people to complete to further assist us in the next stages of design. We need your help with this!

This "scavenger hunt" is located at: http://www.ohsu.edu:8900/library/julyeval.shtml and should take about 20-30 minutes to complete. Note: This evaluation is only available on-campus as it is on our development server. If the only way you access our site is off-campus and you would like to participate, please e-mail one of the Library Web Managers, listed below.

In recognition of the time involved in you doing this evaluation, the Library is offering the following prizes to be given away in a drawing:

  1. A coupon for 10 (ten!) free document delivery articles
  2. A free pizza
  3. Several coffee coupons at the Marquam Cafe
Anyone completing the evaluation at http://www.ohsu.edu:8900/library/julyeval.shtml by July 31, 1999 will be put into this drawing. The drawing will be held the first week of August.

Please encourage people from your department to go through this evaluation, even if you are unable to do so. The more people we have giving us feedback on this, the better and more useful the Library Web site can become.

This is your chance to tell us what you would like on our site and how you would like it!

If you or anyone from your department is interested in participating in an additional part of this testing, please e-mail one of the Library Web Managers: Laura Zeigen at zeigenl@ohsu.edu or Janet Crum at crumj@ohsu.edu. They will set up an appointment to come and observe you or your coworkers while you do this "scavenger hunt". Note: We are more interested in the information you CANNOT find easily, so don't sweat not having "the right answers" on this!

The results of the evaluation, in addition to the prize winners, will be posted to this "What's New" page in August. We look forward to hearing from you! Tell us what you want! --Laura Zeigen, Library Web Manager

HealthSTAR : The World of Databases beyond MEDLINE

Doing a literature search? If the topic relates to health care delivery, its wise to supplement a MEDLINE search with a search of the HealthSTAR database produced cooperatively by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the American Hospital Association. A successful search strategy created in one database may be rerun without retyping the strategy, since both databases use National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings. Duplicates from MEDLINE may be excluded by limiting to non-MEDLINE in HealthSTAR.

The database contains citations and abstracts to journal articles, monographs, technical reports, meeting abstracts and papers, book chapters, government documents, and newspaper articles from 1975 to the present. A few of the many HealthSTAR journals not indexed by MEDLINE are Consumer Reports, Telemedicine & Virtual Reality, American Journal of Managed Care, Healthcare Benchmarks, Hospital Case Management and Journal of Public Health Management.

HealthSTAR focuses on both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of health care delivery. The following topics are included: evaluation of patient outcomes; effectiveness of procedures, programs, products, services and processes; administration and planning of health facilities, services and manpower; health insurance; health policy; health services research; health economics and financial management; laws and regulation; personnel administration; quality assurance; licensure; and accreditation.

HealthSTAR is available at OHSU through Ovid, both Web and telnet interfaces, and through Internet Grateful Med. Ovid's HealthSTAR has just been changed from five to two chronological segments, for searching convenience, and has been moved on the list just below CINAHL. In addition, MEDLINE has been condensed into three files: 1996 to the present, 1991-1995, and 1966 to 1990. For assistance ask for a reference librarian at 494-3462, the BICC Library Information Desk.

Tips on Searching the Catalog for Audio and Video

The Library often receives questions on ways to do specific kinds of searches. As such, we will have an occassional "What's New" tip on these different kinds of searching. Dan Kniesner, chief cataloguer, compiled this round's list.

Finding CD-ROMs, video, and sound cassettes in the Library catalog can be easier when using the tips listed below.

  • To find out what CD-ROMs and computer software are in our collection, do an author search for Electronic Collection by typing in a/electronic collection.

  • To find out what videos are in our collection, do a keyword search for videorecording (that's one word), type in w/videorecording.

  • To find out what audios are in our collection, do a keyword search for sound recording (that's two words) you would want to enter w/sound recording.

  • To find out what slides are in our collection, do a keyword search for slide (singular) by entering w/slide.

  • To find out all the audiovisual aids in our collection (videos, audios, slides), do a keyword search for audiovisual aids by typing in w/audiovisual aids.

We hope this, and future tips on searching the catalog and databases, prove helpful to you as you use the resources on the site.

Harrison's Online Now Available to OHSU

Effective June 1, OHSU-affiliated patrons are able to access Harrison's Online. The site offers the full text of the 14th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, searchable by keyword. The text is updated frequently, making the online version more current than the print publication. Also included are self-assessment questions (Harrison's PreTests), illustrations not included in the print publication, and links to related Web sites for practice guidelines, associations, etc.

To access Harrison's Online, users should go to http://www.harrisonsonline.com. Under the terms of OHSU's agreement with Harrison's, seven people may use the site simultaneously. Five of these licenses are reserved for on-campus users, who can enter the site without a username or password. The remaining two licenses are available for off-campus use and require the user to log in.

The username and password are available from a Web page that is accessible only from on-campus workstations. A patron who wishes to access Harrison's from off-campus must first obtain the username and password from an on-campus workstation. Patrons may soon be able to obtain the password via telephone; details on this option will follow when it is available. A link to Harrison's, along with access information and a link to the password page, is available on the library's databases page ( http://www.ohsu.edu/library/data2.shtml). Harrison's will also be bookmarked on the library's floor and Information Desk computers. People from off-campus can call the Help Desk to get the username and password.

New Look, Organization for Internet Resources Pages

The OHSU Library Internet Resources pages, at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/netcat/netcat.htm, have a new look, feel, and organization.

The new organization, developed by Steve Teich (Reference Librarian) and Janet Crum (Systems Librarian), involves the listing of various categories, from "Drug Information" to "Basic Sciences" to "WWW Searching" and "Other Health Care" and listing sites under each of these categories by their type: .gov, .com, .edu, and .org. Links from this page are primarily to health related "meta-sites," sites that cover broad areas fairly comprehensively.

There is also a section for "new and interesting" links that we believe hold special interest, even if they don't fit into the meta-site model. The changed categories are reflected in the "Internet Resources" pull-down menu on the top Library page. Please note that many of the links from the old Internet resources page will be included on an archive page, linked from the new page.

Questions, comments, or suggestions for these pages can be submitted via the Internet Resources online suggestion form or by e-mailing libweb@ohsu.edu directly.
