Fee-based Laser Printing in the Library and Information Center

Effective January 4, 1998, fee-based laser printing will be fully-implemented in the Library and Information Center. Fees for laser printing will be $.10 per page. Charges for 2-sided copying will also be $.10 per page. Alternatives to printing such as e-mail and saving to disk procedures will be documented and fully supported from the Information Desk. $5.00 print card s will be sold at the Circulation Desk and may be charged to an OHSU account number. Access to Full Text Electronic Journals Expanded

Links to the full text of approximately 80 electronic journals are available on the Library's Journals and Newsletters Web page (http://www.ohsu.edu/library/netcat/journals.htm), and more are being added daily. These links generally point to publisher pages for titles subscribed to in print by the Library. Often, the articles available via these links are more current than articles available from other sources offered by the Library. Each link is annotated with the range of coverage and any special requirements for access. Most of the sites provide features and services in addition to full text. To access these electronic journals, select Internet Resources/Journals and Newsletters from the Library homepage (http://www.ohsu.edu/library/). In many cases, access is available from OHSU workstations only, pending the deployment of additional technology planned for the coming year. Titles for which the Library has print subscriptions can be expedited for inclusion on the Web page by contacting Cindy Cunningham at cunningc@ohsu.edu.

Ovid: New Look, Default to Full Mode

Library databases have a new look. The OVID database system, which includes MEDLINE, CINAHL, HealthSTAR, AIDSLINE and Psychosocial Instruments, now has a Web version available both on and off campus. It can be reached through the Library's Web page, or directly at www.ohsu.edu/ovidweb/ovidweb.cgi. Users have found it very user-friendly and easier than ever to search the literature. For full text journals, the Web version allows users to view, download and print graphics such as tables, x-rays and illustations. (In the telnet or text version that has been the standard at OHSU, full text articles do not include graphics.) You can view the Web version of Ovid at the Library's display at the BICC Computer Fair November 5th. "How To" sheets for the Web version are available in the Library or at: http://www.ohsu.edu/library/howtos/contents.shtml.

You will see another change in the OVID system -- the telnet version now defaults to "Full Mode" rather than "Easy Mode" when you log in. Full Mode, already the default in the Web version, has many more functions such as searching any field, editing search strategies, and sending results to e-mail or disk You can also choose fields to print and use "command line" searching for complicated strategies. Full Mode uses Ctrl (Control or ^) keys for choosing options. "How To" sheets for Full Mode are available in the Library or at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/howtos/contents.htm.

Library printing is changing, too The old dot-matrix printers are retiring for good as the Library moves toward fee-based laser printing for all printing by the end of November. You can also save to a floppy disk or e-mail Ovid searches instead of printing in the Library. Printed "How to" sheets will be available in the kiosk on the third floor. Additional information on Library printing changes can be found on the Library "What's New" page or by inquiring at the service desks.

Also watch the Library Web site for "Journals and Newsletters." A growing number of journals are available online in full text because the Library already subscribe to the printed versions. These are in addition to the full-text journals already loaded on Ovid.

The "Basics" series of classes in information access, that have been taught to thousands of users over the past years, will reflect all these changes. We will be teaching literature searching for full text, graphics, the very latest tables of contents, and navigating the Internet.

Your input is always welcome!

Fee-based Laser Printing in the Library and Information Center

During fall term, 1998, the Library and Information Center will implement a new procedure for printing: ALL print jobs will be directed to laser printers located behind the Circulation Desk. There will be a $.10 per page fee for printing. This will be consistent with fee-based photocopying charges on campus and will conform with practice at most academic li braries. For a one-month period while the Library implements the new procedures, all laser printing will be FREE. Users will be able to purchase debit cards or pay cash. Cards may be purchased using OHSU accounts. Alternatives to printing such as e-mail and saving to disk procedures will be documented and fully supported from the Information Desk. These changes will address issues of economy in the Library as well as Library user suggestions to: Reduce noise Reduce waste Simplify the printer selection process More information will be posted on the library Web page, distributed from the Library service desks and publicized in OHSU publications and as it becomes available. For additional information contact: Cindy Cunningham, cunningc@ohsu.edu, 494-3481
