OHSU Library
How the Off-Campus System Works
Adapated with
permission from
Johns Hopkins University Many of the electronic resources provided through the OHSU Libraries
are licensed to be used only by current students, faculty and staff.
To comply with these license agreements, access is often restricted to
the Internet Protocol (IP) address range associated with the campus
network. For students, faculty and staff who access the Internet through
third-party Internet service providers (ISPs) this presents a problem.
The IP address owned by the ISP will not be recognized as a valid OHSU
address and access to the licensed resource will be denied. To remedy
this situation, the OHSU Library has installed a program called EZProxy
on an OHSU server. OHSU faculty, staff and students with current library
privileges may use this program to access IP-authenticated resources
from off-campus.
The server and EZProxy software
acts as an intermediary between users and the Internet. It allows
an authorized user to access almost all restricted electronic resources
available through the library Web pages from home or on the road. This
type of remote access is often referred to as "proxy" access.
Links for off-campus users include a special string of code that invokes
the EZProxy software. For example, the URL for Archives of Dermatology is
http://archderm.ama-assn.org The off-campus URL for this
title is:
https://liboff.ohsu.edu/login?url=http://archderm.ama-assn.org/.
When a user clicks this off-campus link, the EZProxy/off-campus system will
prompt the remote user to log in with his/her last name and
library barcode. If the login is
successful, the EZProxy system will act as a proxy to the restricted
resource. The EZProxy system will request the page from the Web server
and then pass it back to the remote user. The EZProxy system is allowed
to access the page because it is on the OHSU network.
You may access various databases, electronic journals, and electronic
books, all linked
from the Electronic Resources page
(databases/ejournals).

"Getting Started" page.
