THE DPTaP SHOT (TRIPLE)

Prevents diptheria, tetanus, and whooping cough

This shot is given:

· At 2 months old
· At 4 months old
· At 6 months old
· At 18 months old
· Once between the ages of 4 to 6 years

The vaccine may cause your child to:

· be fussy
· be tired
· have a little fever
· be sore where the shot was given

(These symptoms may last 1 to 2 days, and in the place of the shot a swelling may last without pain for a few weeks).

How to care for your child if there is a fever after the shot:

  •  At 2 and 4 months, breastfeed or give formula every 2 to 3 hours, and put on light clothing
  • At 6 and 18 months, breastfeed or give formula, or water or juice every 2 to 3 hours, and put on light clothing
  • Give Tylenol o Motrin for children for fever and pain. Least expensive brands are okay. Ask your doctor how much to give your child! DO NOT GIVE ASPIRIN!

If it hurts in the area of the shot, put ice or cold wet washcloths over the spot.

  • CALL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOUR CHILD:

  • Has a fever of over 102 degrees under the arm for more than 24 hours
  • Has convulsions or is very weak
