OHSU Library - LIB
This is a 1-1/2 hour class on how to effectively use Internet Search Engines other than Google to locate information. Google is often the only resource consulted by users when they search the web for information. However, there are a number of other useful search engines out there that possess features and capabilities such as Result Clustering and Expert Referrals that Google does not offer to its users. This class will compare and contrast the variety of Internet search sites out there and will provide hands-on exposure to these resources.
CINAHL, available through EBSCO, has some unique features that MEDLINE
does not have. Learn
how to use these features to find nursing and allied health literature.
Learn about the multiple places you can search to discover who is citing you, which articles you should be citing, and if a specific article has been cited. Includes techniques for searching Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO.
Design your own class or get one-on-one assistance with your research. The reference librarians can help you get the information you need.
We can work with you individually, or we can work with a group. This is especially helpful when you are working on your dissertation/thesis or writing a grant. Contact the Reference Department at
or (503) 494-3471 to arrange a class for a specialized need.
Learn how to get information, much of it full text, from this suite of databases. Databases included are Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, Alt Health Watch, Health Source: Nursing/Academic, Newspaper Source, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection.
How can I download citations from OVID MEDLINE and PubMed into EndNote? This and many other EndNote questions will be answered in this introductory class. Learn how to create EndNote libraries, enter and edit references, and how to put your bibliography in APA, MLA and other bibliographic formats.
Learn how to find the best evidence, by using the Evidence Based Medicine collection, which includes Cochrane and the ACP Journal Club, as well as specific search techniques for MEDLINE and CINAHL.
The Library has access to over 6,000 journals and over 40,000 books online. Learn how to find full text articles and books right from your office and home computers. Registration is limited to current OHSU student, faculty and staff only.
There is a wealth of quality information written at the patient level available online, both through resources the library subscribes to and free on the Internet. Learn how to easily find this information for your patients (or for yourself!).
Basic searching techniques for the Medline database using the OVID interface. You will also learn how to create a personal account so that you can save searches and set up auto-alerts.
Find information in the psychological literature dating back to 1872. Participants will learn how to formulate and perform searches using the unique vocabulary and features of PsycINFO.
Basic and advanced search techniques using natural language, basic navigational options and display features, the Related Articles feature, Search Limit options, and the Single Citation Matcher. Some of the more advanced topics that will be covered include the PubMed MeSH Browser, linking out to Molecular Biology Resources and Full Text link resources, saving search strategies via a personalized Cubby, and advanced searching techniques using direct Field tags and Boolean operators.
Have you ever spent hours organizing references or formatting a bibliography? The library provides FREE access to a time-saving product called RefWorks, a web-based application similar to EndNote. Students, researchers or anyone writing papers are likely to find this introductory class very useful. You’ll learn how to download citations from OVID MEDLINE and PubMed and create bibliographies in a variety of styles such as APA and MLA.
Get the information you need and have fun at the same time.
Learn basic information about designing surveys, the kinds of questions to ask, and how to ask them.
Then learn how to use SurveyMonkey, survey software that has a free basic subscription and an inexpensive more powerful one.
This class will help you design a survey, and use SurveyMonkey to send it out and get results you can easily interpret.
This class will show you how you can take information retrieved from one resource and parlay it into additional searches in other OHSU information resources. If you’d like to upgrade your tired “one and done” information searching skills for a more effective and comprehensive manner of searching, this class will show you the techniques that will enable you to become a power searcher who can hop from one database to another to gather as much relevant information as you can on a topic.
Library Database classes are free for OHSU Faculty, Staff and Students (no-show without cancellation incurs $25 fee). An Alias account number, Fiscal Authority’s name, phone, e-mail and FAID# are required to confirm your class or training.
Cost for non-OHSU people is $25.00 except the Surveys Made Easy class is $50.00.
