1. About MEDLINE Interfaces

MEDLINE is the index to medical journals maintained by the National Library of Medicine and the content is for the most part the same no matter which interface is chosen.

  • OHSU recommends the Ovid MEDLINE interface as the quickest, most accurate way to search in a database covering more than 4,600 journals, but remember that some additional access to medical literature is available through the other interfaces.

  • To find journal articles using a "keyword and relevance ranking" technic, search MEDLINE, in the PubMed interface at NLM.

2. Library Catalogs

OHSU Library Catalog
http://catalogs.ohsu.edu
includes the holdings of the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI), the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONRPC), and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (which is not affiliated with OHSU) and a link to the Orbis Cascade Alliance Union Catalog.

PORTALS (Portland Area Library Resources) offers access to Portland Libraries beyond OHSU and includes eight library catalogs and a few databases. Library Catalogs are available from home computers, but Licensed Database access requires a networked computer. OHSU users may access PORTALS databases off-campus once they have registered and received passwords for their off-campus account.

  • PSU's Catalog and other library collections may be checked to supplement materials at OHSU. The Government Documents Depository Collection may be searched using the "Advanced" interface in their catalog.

  • Orbis Cascade Alliance library consortium offers access to the libraries of twenty six Oregon and Washington educational instutions, both public and private.

3. Additional Databases

Over 150 links to other databases can be found on the Library's Databases page. Many of these are devoted to aspects of medicine and health care.

MEDLINEplus is the premier consumer health and patient education database.

4. Full-Text Journals

An increasing number of journals may be accessed full-text using the Journals page. In addition, it's a handy way to find:

IP recognition (Internet Protocol) allows servers to recognize users from networked locations, thus allowing access to full-text books and journals from any OHSU workstation. Links to full-text articles are available from within Ovid databases.

The connection for Off-Campus access is through a proxy server ( Off-Campus Access to Electronic Resources), which requires advance registration. Once registered, OHSU users may access full-text journals and other electronic resources at their home computers.

5. Drug Reference

MICROMEDEX is a Knowledge Base of drug information and includes both clinical decision support databases and tools. Databases cover Drug Interactions, Toxicology, and Alternative Medicine, and may be searched through an Integrated Index that accepts trade as well as generic drug names. CareNotes is included as a separate database of patient information. Adjuncts for clinical decisions are in the Dosing and Therapeutic Tools section. Micromedex is available only from networked workstations.

Much of the drug information for health professionals remains in printed form and is found in Reference Section 14 and in the Ready Reference Collection (Yellow Stripe).

For expert advice in researching, see Drug Information: A Guide to Current Resources, 2nd edition, by Bonnie Snow, in Reference Section 14, QV4 S674d 1999.

6. Other Textbooks on the Web

Harrison's Online is available from OHSU workstations. Additionally, it may be reached by using the Off-Campus Access server, which requires special registration. The full text is searchable by keyword and updated frequently. The site also includes self-assessment questions, additional illustrations, and links to related Web sites (practice guidelines, associations, etc.)

Stat!Ref, a searchable collection of 31 clinical reference texts, is available from OHSU workstations. Additionally, it may be reached by using the Off-Campus Access server, which requires special registration.

AccessMedicine, a searchable collection of clinical and basic science texts, is available from OHSU workstations. Additionally, it may be reached by using the Off-Campus Access server, which requires special registration.

MD Consult which includes 32 textbooks among its services is available from OHSU workstations with a personal password. Additionally, it may be reached by using the Off-Campus Access server, which requires special registration.

The Electronic Books page has links to over 80 books.

Medical textbooks covering the major specialties are shelved in Reference Section 22.

7. Finding Medical Terms

Medical conditions frequently are known by many different names, and finding the right one to search can be difficult. In Ovid MEDLINE, the MeSH Subject Headings group together variant terms, so that often the NLM 'Green Book' (Thesaurus) is the best place to start. Copies are at the Reference Desk and throughout the Library. The most frequently used Medical Dictionaries and guides to Syndromes are found in the Ready Reference Collection (Yellow Stripe). Reference Sections 1-7 contain many kinds of resources on nomenclature-- dictionaries, syndromes, special medical classifications.

OHSU School of Health Informatics provides the database CliniWeb International, a multi-lingual index.

8. Consumer Health Resources/Patient Education

The Consumer Health Resources offers an easy access point to health information meant for health professionals seeking educational materials for patients, for patients who are searching for themselves, and for community members who are looking for more information on a health topic. Please see these resources:

The Library also has access to several databases which include consumer and patient information:

9.  Finding Other Locations for Journals and Books

For the OHSU community, material that OHSU does not own may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, found in person at another Library, or borrowed directly through Orbis Cascade Alliance. ILL requests may be placed from the Library page for Interlibrary Book or Journal requests. OHSU staff and students have reciprocal borrowing privileges in other PORTALS member libraries. There are several Union Lists and combined catalogs which may be helpful: Orbis Cascade Alliance union catalog, called Summit, includes books as well as journal titles. WorldCat is a PORTALS resource useful especially for checking citations for ILL.

10.  Finding Health Statistics

The primary collector of health statistics is the U.S. Government, and finding your way around can be confusing. A good starting place is the National Center for Health Statistics, an Agency which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The NCHS webpage is a gateway to all kinds of statistical archives. FASTATS A to Z is a handy Statistical Rolodex. Special databases are available to researchers through links like CDC Wonder and Healthy People 2000.

11.  Evidence-Based Medicine Tools

OHSU Library subscribes to five Ovid evidence-based medicine databases, tools for making medical decisions. They are Clinical Evidence, EBM Reviews - ACP Journal Club, EBM Reviews - Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, EBM Reviews - Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and EBM Reviews - Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness. They are available from the Library Databases page and require a password. Helpful information on using these databases can be found by clicking on the informational i to the left of the database name once you have connected to Ovid.

Some additional suggested resources are available in the Library and on the Internet.

12.   Guidelines

Current medical practice places strong emphasis on guidelines and protocols in the various medical specialties. The Library's growing collection is kept in Reference Section 9 . Electronic access is good, but some Guidelines are available only through print resources. When searching in Ovid MEDLINE, Guidelines may be found through using 'Publication Types' in the 'Limits' option of the interface. Directories

13.  History of Medicine

Most of OHSU's History of Medicine materials are kept in their own special collection. For information on how to use them, please see the History of Medicine FAQ. Some general reference books are found in Reference Section 17, but many historical materials are older and will not be accessible on weekends since the Old Library opens weekdays only, from noon to 6pm. Materials needed from off-site storage require a written request and will involve a waiting period.

14.  Evaluating Health Information on the Web

Some excellent guides to sites for electronic Health information are in Reference Section 19, but users of web resources need to develop the critical skills for evaluating them. As a great starting place for self-education, see Health Reference Triage: Health Resources for the Public The web bibliography is part of a Health Information Curriculum developed by OHSU Reference staff for Consumer Health.
