For some, caregiving evolves. For others it comes in a time of crisis, unplanned and unexpected.

If you are providing regular assistance, you are a caregiver -- whether you live with your elder, next door, across the state, or even across the country.

Assess the situation
Take a look at your elder’s functioning in the areas we've identified. If you are concerned with two or more, it may be time to take a more active role in the life of your elderly relative or friend.

Help in one or two areas can sometimes allow elderly people to stay in their own home and maintain some independence as long as possible.
