Question

How effective is spinal cord stimulation in treating chronic back and leg pain?

Answer

Spinal cord stimulation can be highly effective in alleviating back or leg pain caused by nerve damage. The treatment works by applying an electric current to the source of the pain, blocking the pain signals.

This is achieved with an outpatient procedure, in which two small components or “leads” are implanted into the back. These leads are connected to a generator, which is programmed to provide a safe, low dose electrical current.

Although I know patients who have had great success with spinal cord stimulation, this treatment is not right for everyone. To find out if it is the best treatment for you, it is important to have a medical evaluation and discuss all of your alternatives.
