Artificial Disc Replacement
Overview
Artificial disc replacement is a relatively new way to treat degenerative arthritis in the discs of the lower spine.
Only a small percent of patients are candidates for this procedure. Many patients who have degenerative conditions in their lower backs do not qualify for total disc replacement, either because of the number of discs involved or some spinal instability. Total joint replacement is usually reserved for patients with arthritis in only one spinal disc who haven’t had a previous fusion surgery.
For patients who qualify, total disc replacement has been successful and effective for treating pain and improving quality of life in patients with a degenerative disease in their lower spine.
