In 1998 at age 36 I was shocked to receive a diagnosis of Stage II breast cancer. My treatment was a success and life went on until several other members of my family were diagnosed with various cancers. It took over 13 years before the pieces all fell into place and we learned our family had the BRCA1 gene defect that causes breast and ovarian cancers. I chose OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute for a series of complex surgeries to reduce my cancer risk. I will have my 7th surgery this year in a few weeks. While it has not been easy, I'm very pleased I could receive excellent care close to home and can look forward to many more cancer-free years.
