Physician Training in Global Health (PTGH)
Pilot Course
Physician Training in Global Health (PTGH) will offer a pilot project for six physicians in the fall of 2008. This new program is for physicians with an active Oregon medical license who are interested in training for volunteer medical work in developing countries, including disaster relief.
PTGH will [1] update physicians' clinical skills in primary care (adult medicine, emergency medicine and pediatrics), and [2] provide courses in public health, infectious disease, tropical medicine and related fields pertinent to overseas work.
The program will be given at OHSU with clinical rotations at free medical clinics in the Portland metropolitan area. The training will be intensive, Wednesday evenings and all day Thursdays and Fridays, for ten weeks from October 1 to December 12 (excluding the week of Thanksgiving). A Certificate of Global Health and approximately 90 CME credits will be awarded by OHSU upon completion of the training.

Zimbabwe Artists Project - Opening reception
Art sale

Zimbabwe Artists Project is a non-profit organization committed to assisting women in Zimbabwe in their quest for economic self-reliance. These artists from rural eastern Zimbabwe create beautiful and affordable art, including paintings on boards, appliqués, paintings on fabric, and embroideries. Their work will be on exhibit through the main floor gallery space at the Olympic Mills Commerce Center for the month of August.

The 6th Annual African American Health Walk
Benefit walk
African Americans die from stroke and heart disease and other preventable diseases at higher rates than whites. In 2001, the rate of death from stoke in Oregon was 88% higher for blacks than whites. The African American Health Coalition (AAHC) has sponsored a no cost physical activity program for Blacks since 2001, to address this disparity. The annual Health Walk allows the AAHC to engage and educate the community in healthy living practices and raise money to sustain the free physical activity classes program. Join us for this family event. There will be food, music, face painting, a children's bounce house, and much more! Details click to see flier. Dr. John McCabe will be visiting OHSU giving Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds on May 9 and also has graciously offered to meet with the Global Health Initiative Steering Committee on Tuesday May 8. John is Chair of the Emergency Medicine department and Vice Dean of the SOM at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He is former president of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He also has a great deal of experience at the departmental, SOM, and university levels in practical issues for furthering Global Health initiatives.

Family Festival with inspiring speeches and music
Focus will be on the Millennium Development Goals. An interactive family festival is planned with speakers and music interwoven throughout the afternoon, as well as, display tables for various organizations, arts and crafts, a green area for families to enjoy, and a labyrinth created from children's shoes that will be donated to groups serving children. It will be co-sponsored by The Episcopal Diocese of Oregon and the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Millennium Development Goals In 2000 leaders from 191 nations - including the United States - agreed to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015. They committed themselves and their nations to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. 2. Achieve universal primary education. 3. Promote gender equality and empower women. 4. Reduce child mortality. 5. Improve maternal health. 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. 7. Ensure environmental sustainability. 8. Create a global partnership for development with targets. If the world meets the MDGs, more than 500 million people will be lifted out of extreme poverty and more than 300 million will no longer be hungry.

Dr. Martha Pelaez talks on "Public Health Challenges for an Aging Population in Developing Countries" at 3:30pm at OHSU.

Dr. Pelaez has been on the forefront of work on Latin American aging for most of her career. Most recently, she served as the Regional Advisor on Aging and Health for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/ World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Pelaez has also taught philosophy and bio-ethics at Xavier University of Louisiana, served as the guest editor for publications like the Journal of Aging and Health and the Pan American Journal of Public health, and has seen much of her own work published in major journals.
