Patient 2 is a 42 year old who had severe pelvic pain due to her fibroid. Images a and b demonstrate the dramatic reduction in blood flow to the fibroid with embolization of the uterine artery.

Image of Patient 2 before fibroid embolization

a) before embolization, the enlarged uterine arteries are seen as twisting white lines over the lower pelvis. A web-like network of fine white lines in the middle of the pelvis represents blood flowing into a very large fibroid (about 10 inches in diameter).

Image of Patient 2 after fibroid embolization

b
) after embolization, the uterine arteries are blocked, and no blood flow is seen in the fibroid.
