Patient 2 is a 42 year old who had severe pelvic pain due to her fibroid. Images a and b demonstrate the dramatic reduction in blood flow to the fibroid with embolization of the uterine artery.
a) before embolization,
the enlarged uterine arteries are seen as twisting white lines over
the lower pelvis. A web-like network of fine white lines in the middle
of the pelvis represents blood flowing into a very large fibroid (about
10 inches in diameter).
b) after embolization, the uterine
arteries are blocked, and no blood flow is seen in the fibroid.
