Patient 1 is 39 years old, and had been experiencing a significant amount of vaginal bleeding. She had improved with Lupron injections, but began having recurrent bleeding when the medication was discontinued. Below are her angiograms:

Image of Patient 1 before fibroid embolization

a)before embolization, X-ray dye in the blood vessels shows a rounded collection of large vessels in the pelvis. This structure, about 8 inches in diameter, is the patient's fibroid.

Image of Patient 1 after fibroid embolization

b) after embolization, the fibroid is no longer seen. This is because blood no longer reaches the fibroid.

She went home on the same day as her procedure, and her menstrual periods returned to normal during her first cycle after uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).
