OHSU Center for Ethics in Health Care Senior Scholar Criteria
Senior Scholars are added to the Center by invitation of the Center Executive Group. Senior Scholars do not typically have a key administrative role in directing a Center program, initiative, or core activity. To be considered for Senior Scholar status with the Center, the candidate must be engaged in ethics-related scholarly activity and that activity must support the goals, missions, or values of the Center. Such activities include, but are not limited to:
Clinical ethics consultation or similar activity
Health care ethics research
Health care ethics teaching or mentoring
Health care ethics policy work
State or local health care ethics activities
National health care ethics activities
Recognition in the field of health care ethics
A history of accomplishment in health care ethics as evidenced by publications, teaching, research, or similar activities. Ethics-related publications or presentations alone are not sufficient to qualify for Senior Scholar status.
The activities listed above must be done in support of the goals, missions, or values of the Center and not limited to ethics work done that, while beneficial, does not relate to the Center. Examples of such work or activities include but are not limited to:
Any of the above listed activities that are done as part of a Center initiative or program
Any of the above activities that are done at the request of the Director of the Center for Ethics in Health Care
Any of the above activities that result in impact (policy or procedure change, implementation of initiatives, recognition, education) beyond the applicant's home institution
Local or national work done by recognized leaders in health care ethics that supports the goals, missions, or values of the Center and who request a formal affiliation with the Center. The Executive Committee will consider such requests and the decision to confer or deny Senior Scholar status will be based upon current priorities and strategic plans for the Center.
Simply listing or acknowledging the Center in publications or presentations is not considered to be sufficient to qualify for Senior Scholar status. The applicant's ethics-related work should demonstrate elements of originality and not be solely duplicative of work done by others in the field.
Senior Scholars will be requested to provide an annual report detailing ethics-related publications, presentations, and other scholarly activity at the end of each academic year.
A Senior Scholar may also serve as a Clinical Consultant or Community Council member but may not serve in other Center roles.
