Dr. Smith received his M.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He subsequently completed an Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by a Master of Public Health Degree at the same University. He completed a fellowship in Rhinology and Sinus Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

He served on the faculty at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee prior to becoming Chief of Rhinology and Sinus Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is the current Director of the Oregon Sinus Center at OHSU where he serves as Professor and Chief of Rhinology and Sinus Surgery.

His practice is focused on rhinology and sinus surgery. He is actively involved in clinical research and holds a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study outcomes of treatment of sinus disorders. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Rhinology, the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, and the American Journal of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Smith has been invited to speak nationally and internationally about nasal and sinus disorders and surgery and has numerous publications in medical journals and textbooks.
