Education & Training

Our research training program is supported by training grants, and dedicated to the development of research methodology, critical thinking and scientific expertise in trainees at all levels in the field of otolaryngology/head & neck surgery. Our goal is to facilitate the entry of otolaryngology physicians and other young investigators into academic practice or research careers and increase the likelihood of successful extramural funding for their research activities.

The advantage of an integrated training program such as ours - incorporating training slots for residents, predoctoral and postdoctoral Ph.D. candidates, and medical students - is that synergistic interactions enhance and expand the training experience for all those supported by the grant. Each type of trainee comes to the program with differing experience, expertise, and approach to the basic sciences and clinical medicine. The more the trainees interact in a meaningful way, the more they learn from each other.

Residency Support
We offer a contiguous two-year rotation between the fourth and fifth year of OTO/HNS residency for research training. This training will allow resident physicians to formulate appropriate research questions and develop longer-term interests. This two-year term between research and academic appointments will enhance resident competitiveness for professional positions.

Our Department also maintains a six-month rotation in research for all residents not enrolled in the training grant. This rotation is performed in the second year of OTO/HNS as a PGY-3.

Postdoctoral Fellowships
We offer a variety of postdoctoral fellowships in clinical and basic science. To identify specific areas of interest, and learn about the types of fellowships currently available, contact individual clinical faculty and research faculty members.

Training Grant Support for Postdocs and Ph.D. Students
Through our training grant, our Department funds one predoctoral and one postdoctoral candidate per year. For more information, contact Jill Lilly, Oregon Hearing Research Center.

Short-Term Internships
Two summer interns are supported by our training grant. These internships offer three-month traineeships in research laboratories. For more information, contact Peter Steyger, Ph.D. (mailto:steygerp@ohsu.edu), Oregon Hearing Research Center.
