What's New - Faculty and Resident Highlights
It's the time of year that new people arrive and others leave on their journeys. Dr. Brian Downs, Fellow will be staying on in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery here as Assistant Professor. Dr. Mia Skourtis, Microvascular Fellow will head for a Craniofacial Fellowship at Stanford next year and a Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic the year after. Chief Resident, Christopher Hargunani, will be joining Drs. Thomas, Lundeberg, and Shiley in private practice in NW Portland. Chief Resident, Douglas Reh will do a Rhinology fellowship at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary next year. Congratulations to all!

Dr. Tom Wang is Invited Faculty for the AO ASIF Course, Aesthetic Skeletal Facial Surgery in Chicago, July 21-23, 2006.

The Western States Rhinology Course will meet October 26-28, 2006 in Sonoma, California. Guest Faculty presenting from ENT will be: Dr. Ted Cook: Nasal Valve Surgery and Functional Rhinoplasty; Dr. Karen Fong: Update on Olfaction and Incorporating Allergy into Your Practice; and Dr. Timothy Smith: Treatment Outcomes in Rhinosinusitis.

Dr. Neil Gross has joined the Head and Neck Surgery/Oncology faculty in ENT after receiving his MD from OHSU, completing a surgery internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, a residency in our ENT department, and a fellowship in head and neck surgery/oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is coordinating his research on the molecular basis of human carcinogenesis and the application of novel targeted therapeutics with Dr. Xiao-Jing Wang and plans to initiate clinical trials based on those efforts. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck squamous cell cancers, salivary gland and skull base tumors. Welcome back Dr. Gross!

Dr. Timothy Smith has received a four-year $1.5 million NIH grant beginning in 2006 to study clinical outcomes of the surgical management of chronic sinusitis. The study is multidisciplinary and multi-institutional with collaboration from Stanford University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Carol MacArthur is being inducted into the Triologic Society at the national meeting in May 2006. Her Triologic Thesis was accepted: C3H/HeJ Mouse Model for Spontaneous Chronic Otitis Media. Dr. Mark Richardson will also present a Triologic Thesis titled: Fatal Apnea in Piglets Via the Laryngeal Chemoreflex: Postmortem Findings as Anatomic Correlates of SIDS in the Human Infant.

Dr. Joshua Schindler is the new Medical Director of the Northwest Center for Voice and Swallowing and the Section of Laryngology for the ENT Department. Dr. Schindler received his MD from the University of California-San Francisco, did his residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, as well as fellowship training there and at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Welcome Dr. Schindler!

Dr. James Cohen, Dr. Sean McMenomey, and Dr. Timothy Smith have been selected by their peers to be included in the Best Doctors in America 2005-06 database. This is a remarkable honor and is the preeminent listing of its kind.

Dr. Xiao-Jing Wang has been awarded the following grants: (1) $1,575,000 in funding from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research for the period of 03/01/04 - 01/31/09. This is the first NIH grant funded to OHSU for the study of molecular mechanisms of head and neck cancer. (2) NIH grant titled "Effects of Altering TGF Beta Signaling in Wound Healing" for $957,000 for 04/01/04-03/31/08. (3) NIH grant titled "Inducible Mouse Models for Skin and Oral Cancer" for $535,500 for 10/01/04-09/30/09.

Dr. Ted Cook will present an instructional session on The Art of Total and Sub-Total Nasal Reconstruction at the 12th British Academic Conference in Otolaryngology and ENT Expo in Birmingham, England, July 5-7, 2006.

Shi-Long Lu, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Molecular Biology-Head and Neck Cancer Research, with a team including Xiao-Jing Wang, MD, PhD, Peter Andersen, MD, and Christopher Corless, MD has developed the first animal (mouse) model to treat head and neck cancers as of May 2006. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is the sixth most common cancer in the United States. Congratulations to all!

New evening office hours being offered starting June 6, 2006 by Dr. Tom Wang, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. First Tuesday of every month until 6:30 pm. Patients arriving after 5:30 pm will find available parking across the Emergency Department.

At the 2006 Annual Meeting & Research Workshop on the Biology, Prevention and Treatment of Head & Neck Cancer, American Head & Neck Society, August 17-20, 2006 in Chicago, the following faculty will offer instructional courses: Dr. James Cohen - Management Non-Well Differentiated Thyroid Cancer; Dr. Peter Andersen - Management of the Eye in Head and Neck Cancer; Dr. Mark Wax - Dilemmas in Reconstruction of the Head and Neck

Dr. Timothy Smith has been named to the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Rhinology, the subspecialty journal for research related to rhinology and sinus surgery. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, as well as the American Journal of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Timothy Smith has arrived to begin his directorship of the Oregon Sinus Center. He was previously Professor of Otolaryngology & Communication Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Welcome Dr. Smith!

Dr. Karen Fong, co-chair of the Membership and Credentials Committee of the American Rhinologic Society, has proposed changes in the credentialing process for new ARS members. The ARS is embarking on a 50th Anniversary membership drive. See article by Dr. Fong in Spring 2005 Nose News, the ARS publication. The society is requesting members to seek out nonmember colleagues with an interest in Rhinology and direct them to Dr. Fong (fongka@ohsu.edu).

Dr. Alfred Nuttall is one of two OHSU professors to receive a $1 million, 3-year grant in December 2004 from the NIH to create novel ways to better understand the basic mechanisms of hearing using optical instrumentation. He will work with Dr. Steven Jacques of biomedical engineering at the OGI School of Science & Engineering.

Dr. Mark Richardson, Professor and Chair of ENT, has obtained an NIH-sponsored five-year resident research training grant for $600,000 beginning 2003.

Dr. Sean McMenomey has been elected to the OHSUMG Board of Directors as of July 2003 through 2006.

Dr. Mark Wax has been appointed Chair of the Research Committee for the AAFPRS for a three-year term starting in 2004.

Dr. Sean McMenomey has been promoted to Professor and given the Teacher of the Year Award by the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery. Congratulations Dr. McMenomey!
