The Department of Emergency Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University was established as an interdepartmental division in June l977, becoming the third U.S. medical school to establish an independent academic emergency medicine program. Since then the Department of Emergency Medicine has experienced remarkable growth in its faculty and programs, receiving full departmental status in April 1992.

The Department of Emergency Medicine has always been deeply committed to the training of emergency medicine residents. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program, originated in 1978, is a fully accredited, three-year program that accepts 9 residents per year at the EM-I level. June 2004 marked the graduation of the 25th class to complete emergency medicine training at OHSU.

Activities of the department span the entire scope of emergency medicine. In addition to providing care in the Emergency Department, faculty direct programs in medical toxicology, advanced paramedic training, emergency medical systems communication, aero-medical transport, occupational health, undergraduate and graduate medical education, medical informatics, and research in emergency medicine
