Faculty from Pediatric Emergency Services (PES)
participate in the
education of pediatric and emergency medicine residents at OHSU.
We run a monthly pediatric simulation experience in the Emergency
Department for residents, nurses and faculty and a monthly Pediatric
Emergency Medicine multi-discliplinary conference from 8 a.m. to
noon in the Doernbecher Children's Auditorium on the 11th floor (see
2006-2007 Schedule) . All providers are welcome to attend.
We are involved Pediatric Advanced Life Support training and other
community outreach training, including office emergency training and
education. We are providers of pediatric emergency training for all
pre-hospital providers in the metropolitan Portland area and OHSU's
own paramedic program.
Our section members are involved in a multitude of research areas
including:
- degradation of paramedic pediatric skills
- pediatric trauma system
- pediatric airway management in the pre-hospital setting,
- use of intramuscular midazolam for treatment of pre-hospital
pediatric seizures,
- utilization of antibiotics in the ED
- understanding the relationship between childhood obesity and
trauma
- bronchiolitis epidemiology
- resistant infections of the skin
- Fast scan MRI's of the brain with children who have CNS shunts .
We are also developing an ED-based injury prevention education
program and participate in the school-based Risk Watch injury
prevention program with the Portland Fire Bureau.
We also participate in child abuse and neglect activities with
Doernbecher Children's Hospital and are helping to create a joint
national AAP/ACEP/MedicAlert sponsored "Emergency Dataset for
Special Needs Children" that will allow critical medical information to
be available to health care providers regardless of location.
