The Emergency Medical Interest Group

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group is a student run, faculty-mentored organization geared towards those OHSU students to Emergency Medicine as a specialty and a career choice. EMIG holds regular meetings which includes hands-on clinical skills, and interactive presentations and lunch panel discussions with Emergency Medicine Faculty and Residents.

EMIG provides preceptorship opportunities to OHSU students to shadow an Emergency Medicine senior resident in the ED. The shadowing program is designed to provide an opportunity for 1st and 2nd year medical students to gain exposure to the Emergency Department, EM physicians, and EM patients. Students are paired directly with an EM faculty advisor and can expect to observe the attending in all aspects of patient care.

Goals of EMIG are:

  1. Introduce medical students to the field of Emergency Medicine (EM)
  2. Organize, develop, and promote interest in the specialty of emergency medicine.
  3. Encourage and develop student interest in EM through discussion groups, workshops, and attending/medical student mentoring program.
  4. Provide clinical exposure for medical students in the emergency department.
  5. Provide guidance through the emergency medicine residency process.
  6. Provide leadership to promote active student involvement in emergency medicine.
  7. Serve as liaison for possible research projects.
  8. Assist the professional advancement of those students seeking careers in emergency medicine.

EMIG holds various luncheons throughout the year on different topics of student interest. Below is a brief list of talks and clinics and the dates they are tentatively schedule. Feel free to contact the coordinator of each event for confirmation of event date, time and location.
