| PLAYGROUND
SAFETY
Each
year 200,000 children visit emergency rooms due to injury
sustain on playgrounds. Injuries occur due to insufficient
fall surfacing material, lack of supervision or unsafe equipment
which does not meet Consumer Product Safety Commission Guidelines.
Playgrounds
are vital for children and communities and integral to the
stability and livability of neighborhoods. The Injury Free
Coalition for Kids in Portland is working with several North
Portland neighborhoods and schools to increase awareness for
safe play on playgrounds and the replacement of old wood timber
play structures that are common among many of the elementary
schools and some public parks. view

Play Photo Project-J ames
John School
The Community Play Photo Project was
a collaborative between
IFCK, the SUN program at James
John Elementary and professional photographers from the community.
Using cameras children document their experiences around different
themes of “play” allowing IFCK investigators to
identify potential areas of risk, unsafe behaviors and exposure
to environmental hazards during play. The pilot project was
later developed into one of the modules for an after school
safety program which focused on different themes of injury
prevention. view photos
