FallI Injury Data

The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Portland focuses on programs to lower the incidence and mitigate the sequelae of falls. Using the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) Hospital Discharge Index (HDI), which records basic demographic, diagnostic and therapeutic data on all hospitalized patients in the state as the main source of specific E-coded data, it was determined that falls are the number one cause of injury-related hospitalization for all age groups of children less than 15 years old in the Portland metropolitan area. Trauma system data collected at OHSU for the Portland metropolitan area was overlaid to census tracts, geocoding approximately 75% of falls in the 0-14 age group, pinpointing several "hotposts" in North Portland and Washington County. View PDF map

A further breakdown of the data found that falls from buildings and on playgrounds cause 37.5% of injuries for children aged 1-4 years. Playground falls cause 33.3% of injuries in children aged 5-10 year olds in the Portland metropolitan area. view falls graphs A subgroup analysis of EMS run data for a census block in the Aloha area revealed single family dwellings were responsible for the majority of fall-related injuries in the 1-4 year old age group.
