John C. Moorhead Emergency Medicine Endowment Fund
John C. Moorhead started his career at Oregon Health & Science University in 1978, establishing and directing the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, one of the first in the country. The program started with three residents the first year and now trains 10 residents per class.
A Pioneer in Emergency Medicine Training and Advocacy
In April 1991, Dr. Moorhead was appointed chair of the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine. He served on the Board of Directors for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) from 1993 to 2000 and as college president from 1998 to 1999. During his term on the board, Dr. Moorhead greatly increased the role of emergency medicine residents in ACEP by appointing resident members to each ACEP committee. He also created the residency visit program, ensuring that board members visit each emergency medicine residency training program at least once during a resident's training so young physicians could discuss emergency medicine issues with ACEP leaders.
Dr. Moorhead has served as president of the Oregon Medical Association and currently serves as chair of the American Medical Association's Emergency Medicine Section Council. He also serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Emergency Medicine. In 2003, ACEP awarded Dr. Moorhead the 2003 John G. Wiegenstein Leadership Award, one of its most prestigious awards. He serves on the Board of Directors for Oregon College of Emergency Physicians, is president of the Oregon Healthcare Workforce Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and its executive committee.
Dr. Moorhead received his medical degree from Queens University/Medical School in Kingston, Ontario. He graduated from the emergency medicine residency program at McGill University Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Moorhead continues to provide clinical services and education as a professor of emergency medicine in the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine.
Building on Dr. Moorhead's Legacy
To honor Dr. Moorhead's contributions to emergency medicine, emergency medical services, medical education, and health policy, we have established the John C. Moorhead Emergency Medicine Endowment Fund. The ultimate goal is to raise funds to the Endowed Professorship level.
The John C. Moorhead Endowed Professorship will provide continued support of Dr. Moorhead's commitment to education and advocacy in emergency medicine. The endowed professorship fund will sponsor a leading educator in emergency medicine to help shape and develop generations of emergency physicians for years to come.
Open a Doorway of opportunity for the next generation of emergency medicine physicians
