Informatics - Projects

Highlights include the following activities:

  • 1994  The OHSU Emergency Department was one of the first OHSU clinical departments to participate in the OHSU Lifetime Clinical Repository (LCR). All emergency department since 1994 visits are dictated and appear in this data repository.

  • 1997   The OHSU Emergency Department selects an Emergency Department Information System : EMSTAT. This information system provides the foundation for triage, patient tracking, prescription writing, discharge instructions, discharge diagnosis. Anticipated additions include physician order entry and further nursing documentation.

  • 1999  OHSU in collaboration with the Oregon Health Division is awarded funding to demonstrate the feasibility of automated electronic data transfer from an OHSU's Emergency Department to the Oregon Health Division.

  • 2000   OHSU Emergency Department participates in a OHSU "pilot project" demonstrating the feasibility electronic viewing of ECG (MUSE) in real time clinical care.

    OHSU's emergency department is one of the first clinical departments to participate in a hospital wide deployment of electronic viewing of radiological images (PACS).

  • Current Projects:

    Wireless application  The OHSU ED is currently planning on deploying wireless 802.11b technology in the emergency department. Initial projects include beside registration and potentially point of care documentation.

    Video Conferencing  This project is currently in the development phase. Potential applications include electronic video conferencing with referring physicians /providers and the electronic transfer of data and images. In addition, potential intra-institutional applications are being explored.

    Medical Photography/Education  A database of medical teaching images is currently being compiled by members of the faculty.

    Presentations:   Members of the Oregon Health Division and OHSU presented at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta in July 2000:

    1. An Integrated Emergency Services Sentinel Network: The Portland Oregon experience.
    2. Security: The Key to Successful Electronic Data Interchange: The Oregon Health Division/Oregon Health Sciences University Experience.
    3. Using Electronically Transmitted Clinical Data from Emergency Rooms for Emerging Infections Surveillance.
