Medical Resource Hospital: Each year paramedics and EMTs call On-Line
Medical Control about 3,000 times to speak to a physician. Through maintaining
data on these calls, the ECC has assisted the Medical Director and other
researchers in determining where changes in protocols needed to be made.
Dozens of studies have been published over the last ten years using data
collected through these physician contacts, and local protocols have
been modified or taken off-line as a result of studies done with this data.
Regional Hospital: As a service to the community, the ECC serves as a
central point of contact and notification during Mass Casualty Incidents
(MCIs). Through use of various communications means, including 800-mhz
trunked radio and web-based client/server applications, the ECC coordinated
communications between the scene and the area hospitals on several incidents
involving more than 10 scene patients in recent years.
The ECC staff
comes from various
backgrounds in EMS,
including Emergency
Medical Technician/Paramedic,
Emergency Medical Dispatchers,
and Search and Rescue Coordination.
Through an active CQI and continuous
training process, all Emergency Communications Specialists
acquire and maintain
skills related to
the various
roles they fill.
Equipment capabilities in the ECC include UHF 800MHZ
trunked radio system, VHF ground-to-ground, VHF air-to-ground,
HAM dual-band, VHF HEAR, and mobile high-orbit satellite link.
