How to Disable Popup-Blockers
What's a Popup?
Popups are web screens that "pop-up" when you surf the Internet. Here's a typical scenario: you
go to a web page and an advertisement opens up automatically in another browser window. Popups can contain spyware, so many browser deveopers and third-party add-in products allow you to disable popups from occurring.
Some software, such as Sakai, use popups safely to enhance the user's web experience. However, popup blockers need to be configured to allow popups from trusted sources. |
Popup-blockers can interfere with Sakai resources, especially those in the Course Materials tool and the Resources folder.
Most users don't realize that they have one or more popup-blockers on
their computer because these programs are often included with
other porgrams and are installed and activated automatically.
How would you know if a popup blocker is turned on? If you discover that certain course materials won't open when you click on the link, hold
down the Ctrl key and click on the link again. If the material opens,
you likely have an active popup-blocker.
How do you turn
them off or configure them? Below are some of the common
popup-blockers and the methods for changing them:
 |
If your computer has Service Pack 2 installed, then a popup-blocker is installed in Internet
Explorer. To turn it off, click on Tools in the menu, then click on
Internet Options. Click on the Privacy tab and uncheck Block
Popups. |

The easiest
way is to turn off FireFox's popup blocker while you are taking
your course, but it is configurable and you can allow popups from sites
you specify through the Exceptions button. The site you want to allow is http://sakai.ohsu.edu/ |
