Director of the Dotter Institute since 1993, Dr. Frederick S. Keller has been active in the clinical and academic aspects of interventional radiology at OHSU. He is the Cook Professor of Interventional Therapy, professor of Surgery and chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at OHSU.

Keller’s academic contributions have also been recognized by his students. Residents of both the radiology and internal medicine departments named him outstanding teacher and best radiology discussant. His clinical expertise in interventional treatment is also noteworthy; he has authored 230 scientific papers and book chapters, and delivered or participated in more than 285 named lectures, panels and exhibits all over the world. He has also served, or serves, on the editorial boards for the Journal of Interventional Radiology, Seminars in Interventional Radiology, Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, and the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Keller graduated from Swarthmore College in 1964 and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He then completed an internship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in 1969 and a residency at OHSU in 1977. He was chief resident and a fellow of the American Cancer Society in 1976-1977. Certified with the American Board of Radiology in 1977, Keller received a Certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology in 1994. Since then, he has served as an examiner for this certificate.

Active in the interventional radiology professional community, Keller belongs to numerous vascular and interventional radiology organizations. He served on the executive committee for the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR), and was named executive council chair in 1997 and president in 1998. Keller has also served on the board of directors of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research and Educational Foundation (CIRREF) since 1996 and became chairman in 1999. Presently serving as co-chairman of the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation’s Discovery Campaign, he also holds directorships on the boards of the Medical Technology Research Forum and the University Medical Group at OHSU.

Keller was named an honorary professor at the Third Beijing University School of Medicine, Beijing, China in 1994 and Professor Titular of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1997. Keller is an honorary member of the Japanese Radiologic Society and the British Society of Interventional Radiology. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Society of Interventional Radiology in 2005 and later that year was made a distinguished fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Society of Europe. An endowed chair, the Frederick S. Keller Chair of Interventional Radiology, was established in his honor at OHSU.
