Dr. Stanley Barnwell joined the Institute as an associate professor in 1991. He has joint appointments in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Surgery. As an active member of the medical community, Barnwell is chair of the Clinical Faculty Committee in the Division of Neurosurgery and serves as executive director of OHSU’s AVM Support Group.

Barnwell graduated in 1983 from Vanderbilt University with a combined M.D./Ph.D. in pharmacology. He completed his neurosurgery residency in 1989 at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with Dr. Charles Wilson. While there, Barnwell did a two-year fellowship in interventional neuroradiology under Dr. Grant Hieshima. He was an assistant professor of neurosurgery and radiology for a year at UCSF before coming to OHSU. He certified with the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1995.

Barnwell’s recent focus has been on the treatment of stroke. He lectured in June 1998 at the 5th International Workshop of Interventional Radiology in Prague on neurointerventional therapies in the treatment of stroke. His current work includes the use of new techniques in the treatment and prevention of stroke, including the treatment of cerebral aneurysms with the Guglielmi detachable coil, intracranial thrombolysis for stroke and innovations in intracranial angioplasty and stenting.

Outside of the office, Barnwell enjoys hiking and spending time with his wife and children.
