The Division of Hospital Medicine was formally founded in 2005, evolving from our ancestrally linked pre-hospitalist program, commencing in 1995. This history has significance as it relates to our initial core principles and goals of providing excellence in clinical care, and establishing a center of excellence for inpatient teaching and mentorship. In 1998 we further evolved and expanded into the Department of Medicine Hospitalist Program, then mitosed again in 2005 to form the Private Hospitalist Program.
We currently have three distinct programmatic activities within the division:- The Medicine Teaching Service (MTS) serves as the foundation for our rapidly growing division, consisting of 7 faculty whose principle foci are the provision of high quality patient care, but also fast-paced, stimulating and challenging education, delivered in a respectful and supportive manner. The faculty consists of 3 senior and 4 junior faculty clinician educators. Not surprisingly, 6 of the 7 members are active in curriculum oversight as residency program directors, student clerkship directors, or active in major medical student curriculum committees. This bias and interest a decided advantage as we sculpt and operate this inpatient service.
- The Private Hospitalist Program (PHP) is non-teaching service in its 3rd year of operation with a focus on relieving MTS over-burgeoning inpatient team size, and providing 24 hours inpatient medicine consultation and surgical co-management. At the time of this posting we are proud to have received support and will be expanding to a 6 faculty program in the near future to aid in the above activities.
- Pre-operative Medicine. The Division has been active in inpatient pre-operative medicine since 1998; first with the MTS operating the program until 2005, and recently it being operated by the PHP. We became active in the outpatient assessment of pre-operative patients about 2002, and have been developing this activity. Currently we are expanding to have a full faculty member present in the Pre-Operative Clinics.
